Snapshots of black Wiimote and Nunchuk
Posted by admin in Games Gadgets on October 14th, 2009
Everyone knows that there is an upcoming new color for the Wii Remote controller and Nunchuk controller, where it will be available in Henry Ford’s favorite color back in the day where the Model T was the hottest thing on four wheels. Just in case you are still clueless, we’re talking about the color known as black – where those who mark November 16 on their calendars can look forward to a new black Wii Remote controller that will be accompanied by a black Wii MotionPlus accessory at a suggested retail price of $49.99. For those who want to complete the experience, a black Nunchuk controller will be going for $19.99 a pop.

Nyko Action Pack Available Now for FPS-lovers
Posted by admin in Games Gadgets on August 20th, 2009
The last time I covered anything by Nyko, it was the Wand at CES. I have recently tried out the company’s Action Pack, and I am pleased at the company’s efforts at creating a more excellent gaming experience.
The Nyko Action Pack comes with the Wand, as well as the Pistol Grip. Nyko’s exclusive Trans-Port technology allows “a pure digital connection between the grip and the Wand for maximum compatibility with action based games”. I’m not sure what all that means, but I believe it just translates to Wiimote accessories that play better.
This is definitely the case of the Pistol Grip, which is the best gun attachment for the Wii that I have played with so far. Most of these Wiimote gun attachments are usually just plastic plug-ins that allow the player realistic trigger controls for the B key, but forget that Nintendo Wii First Person Shooters actually use the A key.
This A key control is located conveniently on the edge, where someone would cock a gun in real life. Thanks to this gun attachment, Lara Croft can now shoot and jump, instead of just shooting and having me do some awkward move to hit the A key as she is jumping. There is even a tiny switch on the bottom of the grip that allows the user to make the trigger the A key, and the “cocking thing” the B key.
By the way, the Action Pack is good for games that don’t require shooting. I’ve recently been re-playing Lego Indiana Jones, and have had a fun time with this Wii action pack.
In short, I recommend the Nyko Action Pack and highly recommend you head over to the company site and purchase one yourself for $49.99, especially if you are into FPS games.

CiiPR: How a Wiimote can save a life
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on July 15th, 2009
I’m sure that anyone who has learned CPR knows who ResusciAnne is. Just hearing that name flashes me back to high school health class, where I had to put my mouth on some plastic girl’s bleach-flavored lips.
It would appear that someone is giving traditional CPR training a makeover with the addition of a PC application and Wiimote. So when you push on ResusciAnne’s chest, the motion controlled joystick interprets it as correct or incorrect chest compressions.
This is currently a concept technology that has been under development by the University of Alabama at Birmingham since the beginning of this year. A working prototype was created last Spring, and the American Heart Association has pledged $50,000 in grant money for this effort. The Wii CPR software could be available for download as early as this Fall. It would be an open source code so the user can program it to their own specifications.
I’m not certain if users will have to pay for this, but they might have to pay for a broken Wiimote or two. I mean, look at the picture, the lady is crushing it! Well, I hope this technology for CiiPR works, as it sounds like a Rejected Wii Play Game, like the one in this attached video.

Giant Grapples contolled by Tiny Wiimote
Posted by admin in Games Gadgets on July 9th, 2009
See the two gigantic yellow arms, with claws? Those are robot grapples, each with the power to lift 50 tons, and spin at 70 kilometers per hour (12 revolutions per minute).
I’m sure that control of these metal monsters must be difficult, but Simon Wittber from the Australian firm Transmin has greatly simplified it using a Wiimote for controls.
That’s right, the very device used to play WiiSports is now playing a new game! I have included a video of their demonstration that you can view after the jump, and it is something to see and hear.
Man, what I wouldn’t give to try this out. Of course, with great power, comes great responsibility. I realize that this cliché from Spider-man is getting worn out, but do you really want to take the blame for hurling a car into building with the accidental flick of a Wiimote? Just knowing that I had that power would be a real kick, though.
So maybe this Wiimote makes the work of grappling easier, but I have another use: Skill Crane. Yes, this Wiimote-powered grapple could be useful on a new type of game show where the contestant must sift through a pile of wrecked cars to get the real prize: a brand new car.
Of course, that new car would probably be smashed, wouldn’t it? Well, I still like the large skill crane idea.

Gametrak Freedom
Posted by admin in Games Gadgets on March 31st, 2009
Nintendo made history when it released the motion controlling Wiimote, so why shouldn’t other video game consoles carry a motion controller of their own? I suppose it would look like a cheap imitation if they did, but why shouldn’t a good idea be multiplied?
A company called Performance Designed Products (PDP) say that Gametrak Freedom is a 3D motion controller for the Xbox 360. In fact, it almost looks like PDP has made something almost better than the Wiimote.
The Gametrak Freedom has Ultrasonic 3D position sensing which uses sound to determine exactly where the controller is in the room. This new tech may unlock a whole new genre of gaming as the controllers can “see” one player throw something towards another player in a room, and it can sense when a player moves out of the way. The Xbox stick also uses accelerometers that can determine the angle of the controller.
I would appear that a lot of the buttons from the Xbox 360 have meandered their way to Gametrak Freedom. I’m not sure how this controller syncs with the console, but it is probably like the Wii. I wish I would stop making comparisons, but I can’t stop, really.
The Freedom is planned to be released with a game called Squeeballs. I’ve seen the trailer for this game, and it looks a little…disturbing.
