10 Minute Solution comes to the Wii

Some of you have probably heard of the 10 Minute Solution series of exercise DVDs. I mean, they have a Pilates version, Tone and Trouble Zone version, even one called Hot Body Boot Camp. (Shouldn’t it be called Hot Body Booty Camp? Just saying.)

Anyway, Anchor Bay Entertainment, who makes these 10 Minute Solution videos, is planning on doing some business on the Wii as they are making a Wii version of the 10 Minute Solution. The 10 Minute Solution for the Wii uses the WiiFit board, and has three categories of aerobics, cardio boxing, and other mixed games.

I can’t help but wonder why the 10 Minute Solution is being made into a Wii game when the Wii Fit has a very in-depth exercise program. I suppose that the 10 Minute Solution is probably the current exercise fad that will eventually go the way of Jane Fonda, the 20 Minute Workout, Tae-bo, Buns of Steel, and countless others before and after. I guess 10 Minute Solution wanted to make a Wii game before the fad dies, and before the new version of the Wii comes out.

Anyway, the 10 Minute Solution for the Wii should be out soon, but I don’t have the release date as yet. The price point is about $19.99, which is about the same price as the WiiFit Plus without the balance board.

Power Gig: Rising of the SixString gives the six string its gaming glory

The Game Developers Conference gave us a very interesting music game: Power Gig: Rise of the SixString. The most obvious description of it is Guitar Hero with a real guitar.

It is developed by Seven45 Studios, a sister company of First Act, leading musical instrument maker responsible for making the entry-level guitars, basses, and other instruments found at such retailers as target and Wal-Mart.

The guitars that Power Gig comes with are reported to look like the guitars used by younger jammers, and they can be hooked up to any guitar amp. I believe that these games are set up to work for the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, and my source tells me that there is some sort of “dampening block” that holds the strings in place, and the guitar’s fingerboard controls the game.

So, will this Power Gig make Guitar Hero and Rock Band players want to play a real guitar. I would have to say that it does remove the middleman.

Also, does it really make sense that our retail stores have shelves full of plastic instruments but nothing of the real thing? By the way, when Power Gig: Rise of the SixString arrives this fall, but will also include a microphone and drums. I wonder if those will be the real thing too.

Sportpong puts pong on the floor

sportpongTwo weeks ago, we reported on how electronic projections and digital technology was taking traditional board games to a whole new level. Now, old-school video games are being taken to a whole new level with Sportpong.

Yes, you can’t get any more old school with video games than the classic Pong game with the paddles and squared ball. This Sportpong is definitely a more active game than Dance Dance Revolution and WiiSports put together.

You can check out the video after the jump to see how it works, but it has people strapping “paddles” onto their feet that are equipped with special reflectors. From above, projectors beam the image of the bouncing ball, and users must block the ball from hitting the opposite wall, with their feet.

Sounds like a good way to get an old school gamer into shape, doesn’t it? Sportpong feels like a game that people would play at night clubs, and then return home drunk and completely out of breath.

Unfortunately, this Sportpong is not for sale, at least not yet. At this point, it can only be played by contacting the Swiss creators, and scheduling it for special events. I have no idea how much the cost of this is.

Snow Chopper made from spare parts

snowmobile_chopper_610x405I love seeing DIY gadgets like these. Every time I see one, such as the Star Trek phaser, I can’t help but think: “how does one get the time to build these things?”

I mean, I can barely keep up with my writing deadlines. Therefore, I will give my full congratulations to Bob Sawicki and Toby Weisser for using their weeknights and Sundays to build the snow chopper that you see in the photo.

Sawicki and Weisser are stationed in Antarctica, at the McMurdo Station research center. Sawicki and Weisser were responsible for maintaining snowmobiles at the station, and they decided to use the spare parts for the chopper.

In all honesty, if I were stationed in the coldest place on Earth, I would probably do some sort of side project, just so I wouldn’t be driven crazy. Yet the reason why they built it was the McMurdo Alternative Art Gallery (MAAG), an “annual show highlighting the creative and artistic talents of the community”.

In case you are curious, the snow chopper can do 60 miles per hour in the shop, and 6 miles an hour on the snow. Of course, he was joking when he said this, so I don’t have the actual speed. They have taken it out for a spin a few times, though.

Believe it or not, I’m biking on air, and it’s all thanks to the Kolelinia!

500x_kolelinia_1_01_01Hopefully you sang the title of this posting to the theme of the classic show The Greatest American Hero. If you don’t know the theme, watch a few episodes on Hulu, and then realize that “flying away on a wing and a prayer” is possible with the Kolelinia.

It is the Kolelinia that makes it possible for this man in the picture to bike on a tightrope. A Kolelinia user would not need to learn any special balancing skills, but would need some special equipment.

You see, the “tightrope” that is under the bike wheels is not some thick line of wire. In fact, it is a half-pipe shaped material that encloses the wheel quite safely, making the bicycle very difficult to tip over. Of course, one does not dare defy gravity like this on that wheeltrack alone, but a special contraption is attached to the handlebars. This device clips to the other tightrope that you can see at the handlebar level in the picture.

In short, the Kolelinia rider is secured at the handlebars and the tires, and is free to ride/fly wherever these special Kolelinia tracks are. You might think that is a pretty precarious balance, but so is a ski-lift. By the way, the rider can belt themselves to the bike for extra protection from falling.

Honestly, I’m feeling very positive about Kolelinia technology, and can easily see a world where Kolelinia bikers ride above all the traffic below. Of course, there is no guarantee of traffic-free Kolelinia tracks.

Diego-san: The working robot with the freaky baby head

babybot-2-thumb-450x426-32086You want to hear what freaks me out the most? Babies. I’m not talking about real babies that crawl, coo, and you have to change every once in a while. In fact, I think these babies are cute.

I’m talking about every time someone makes a baby’s head and puts it on something like a doll, or in this case, a robot. This is Diego-san, a four-foot tall robot with the head of a baby.

Why they used a baby’s head instead of a some sort of artificial face, I will never know. I mean, Number Five, C3PO, and Wall-E looked cuter. However, Diego-san’s face is made up of 20 moving parts, and it is designed to communicate via facial expression rather than talk.

This baby has already learned how to stand up from a chair on its own, and it can hold a water bottle. I’m guessing it can’t drink the water, as it would probably rust. Maybe the creator should feed it baby oil. Yes, that was a bad joke, and there is no way that I can call the Diego-san anything but “it”.

I’m guessing that Diego-san was designed as some baby simulator or something. Perhaps he is another stepping stone for the advancing science of robotics. I think that it is weird that we have the technology to create this baby’s robot body, but we just don’t have the technology to make an artificial baby head that doesn’t look freaky. Honestly, I feel like this robot should have appeared in the movie Brazil.

Beriscope: See underwater, from land!

Beriscope-by-Jaewon-Choi-thumb-550x413-30241Some of you might remember the other day when we reported on the Coolerbot, a way of exploring the outdoor wildlife from remote control while indoors. The Beriscope is a way of looking at undersea life from remote control.

Here’s how it works: The ball shaped thing on the left side of the device can separate from it, but is still tethered to it with some cable. The user throws this ball into the ocean, and it has a camera on it. From there, the user can look into the visor itself and get a view of the life aquatic.

The goggles look like the type from a Viewmaster, but it doesn’t look like you can view stuff in 3D. I mean, after all, I’m surprised that the ball has a 2D camera on it.

When you are finished with your underwater viewing by a lake or river, you can just pull it back with the handle. At this present time, there doesn’t look to be a way to record the footage.

Of course, the Beriscope is just a concept for now. Yes, it is neat enough to actually be a real product, but this one is conceived by one of our friends over at Yanko Design. I’m sure that some of their concept designs have been made into an actual product, but I don’t know which.

Recon Technologies making some highly advanced ski goggles

recongoggles-thumb-550x449-29652I haven’t been skiing in over a decade, and there were times that I got lost on the slopes. They didn’t have navigation units or cellular phones back then, but this new device from Recon Instruments could turn skiing into a very high-tech experience.

The Recon Instruments ski goggles have a miniature heads-up display that can show the skier’s position on the slopes, as well as the location of his or her friends. You can even use the GPS function to guide the ski patrol to you in case you crash and burn on the slopes.

Not bad, but that is not all they do. It can also display altitude, temperature, as well as recording the skier’s speed the height that he or she has jumped.

It also has a camera, CPU, and storage. The controls are conveniently on the side for easy manipulation, but that might be difficult with a pair of thick gloves on.

Man, I remember back when ski goggles with an anti-fogging fan was a technological advancement. This one looks like you could watch a video or listen to music while waiting in the lift line. What I would have given for a pair of these goggles back in my skiing heyday.

Recon Technologies isn’t planning to release these models until next year. The price is rumored to be quite high, at $350.

ESPN Better Batter has automatic reload and baseball sound effects

better_batter

Teaching your kids to hit a baseball is a bit of a trying task.  Of course, that’s partially because you’re handing your child a bat that probably will at some point hit you instead of the ball.  Plus normally you’re using a tee to teach them.  Once they hit the ball you usually have to pick up the tee and go find the baseball.  With this Fisher-Price product it would at least solve the problems you’d normally have with a normal tee.  Besides wearing full body armor though, there’s no quick fix to keep your child from injuring you.

This ESPN Better Batter has a mechanical arm that drops down and picks up a baseball.  In order to activate that arm, you just have to tap the plate and it’ll automatically load the ball.  The batter comes with baseball “chatter” as well as ESPN music to add a little atmosphere.  It’s meant for ages 3 and up, plus it’ll adjust to accommodate kids as they grow.  It runs on 3 C alkaline batteries, which aren’t included.  You can purchase it for $50 through Fisher-Price.

4Fitness Gym is made to be compact

4fitness1-1-thumb-519x421-28863This seems to be a trend in home exercise equipment to fold up into something very compact, like the Hidden Grove Fitness Armoire Collection and the Fitness Cube. I suppose it is a sign that our living places are just too darn small.

The 4Fitness is a gym system that is designed to fit together and conveniently lean against the wall when it is done. Each of these four sections, when separated, are designed with a specific purpose.

For example, there is one for endurance that has some pedals. Then there is another for power which includes some ropes with handles to hold. It also has a board with a circle on it that is designed to increase balance.

The only section that I don’t understand is one for brain, which looks like a screen of some kind. Say what? In fact, you might notice the screen on the right, and I’m not certain if that is part of the 4Fitness gym system or not.

Well, it’s not like this product is out now, ready for you to buy. No, it’s still a concept, and one that was good enough to enter the 2009 James Dyson Design Awards. Well, let’s see if this one is a winner.
