Solar Lantern expands and collapses
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on August 17th, 2010

Solar lanterns are neat and can be very handy for some quick lighting when you need it. However, you might not want them on display at all times. For those cases you might look into this collapsible design. It’d be great for when you’d like to take them camping or just don’t have a designated outdoor area that you always sit within.
This is definitely a design made with those in mind that are low on extra space. The lantern can shine at night whenever you need it. Then when it’s during the day you can close it up. It has a handy little magnetic strap that’ll let you keep it hung up while it’s getting a little bit of a charge from the sun. It’s a design by Jesper Jonsson, so as of now it’s not actually up for purchase.

T3 Transforming Solar Robot Kit
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on June 9th, 2010

Instead of creating a car or some boring desktop item to demonstrate the usage of solar power, you should pick up a robot. This particular robot is a kit that’ll let you or your children learn a little more about using solar power in a much more interesting way. Plus after you’re all finished building the robot, you’ll have a fun little transforming robot.
The robot can change into a scorpion, a tank and then just the normal robot mode. After you’ve left the robot in the sun for a while to soak up some sun it’ll be able to move about to keep you entertained. You won’t need much in the way of tools either for the 70 piece kit. You’ll just need a screwdriver to assemble the whole thing. The robot could be used for children 8 and up or you could leave it on your own desk for some entertainment while you’re bored at work. You can purchase it for £12.99 or about $19.74 through I Want One Of Those.

Solar gadgets are usually a little more on the practical side. This one doesn’t even serve a real purpose like the solar garden lights. Instead, it’s purely decorative, but that’s plenty good enough. It’s a great modern twist for those that enjoy stained glass hanging in their windows.
When it is bright outside the lamp will shrink up and allow for sunlight to stream through it. Then after dark it will bloom into a snowflake pattern and show off the LED lights. Morning Glory was designed by Wendy Legro, who is graduating from The Netherland’s Design Academy of Eindhoven. That sadly means that this hasn’t been created just yet for mass production. At least so far it’s still a concept design, it’s possible it’ll eventually become more though.

Solar FM Radio Kit
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on May 7th, 2010

Alright, so it’s not a solar portable iPod speaker kit. Which means it might have slightly less appeal for the younger ones that are heavily attached to their MP3 player of choice. However, for those that just love to build and use what they’ve built on a regular basis this little kit would be fun. Plus this FM radio won’t require you to constantly replace batteries.
This kit includes 16 different pieces that you’ll have to put together to get your favorite tunes on your solar powered FM radio. In addition to all of those little bits and pieces you’ll get a AA battery. Now that battery won’t be used all of the time, you can choose to run on either the panel or the battery. The radio itself doesn’t exactly look modern, but the best part is getting to put it all together. You can purchase the kit for £14.95 or about $22.

Solar cells to be printed on paper?
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on May 7th, 2010
The Source from this story really caught my attention. The title of it was “solar cells printed on paper”.
This is not the time to say “Nuff Said”. This is the time to figure out how in the world I can download the template of these solar cells, print out a bunch, and wire them to all the appliances an electrical devices in my house. Then I’m calling the power company and telling them that I am officially off the grid, and I am not paying their high bills.
Unfortunately, this tech is “still years away from a marketable product”. That is a real shame, but these solar cells are only 1.5 to 2 percent efficient at converting sunlight to electricity. You might find those numbers to be very low, and they are.
However, my source says that high efficiency solar cells run between twenty to forty percent efficient. Wow. That’s the high efficiency ones? What will it take to get these paper ones up to that level?
So, I don’t know whether or not we are seeing a future full of paper solar cells. I guess I just know that I want some paper solar cells to power up my things. However, with that efficiency rate, could I even get juice for my cellular phone?

First Solar Powered iPod Speaker
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets, iPod Gadgets on May 6th, 2010
Hammacher is all about being first when it comes to rolling out some rather quirky household items, and this time round we have the First Solar Powered iPod Speaker. Hopefully they’re right, cause we have a niggling feeling that some factory from China has already come up with something similar for the local market in that part of the world. Still, this model enables you to enjoy your favorite tunes when outdoors, relying on the power of the sun to keep it going. You can dock your iPod into the speaker for it to juice itself up. Whenever the panel is closed, it will automatically transform into a device that boasts IPX-4 waterproof rating, resisting splashing water from all angles. Other features include a rugged, rubberized and aluminum body, a couple of 5-watt, full-range speakers for crisp highs, balanced mid-ranges, and resounding, bass-boosted lows. It takes up to 3 hours of solar charging for one hour of use – diminishing returns in some sense, but at least it helps keep the earth green. The First Solar Powered iPod Speaker is going for $199.95 a pop.

Solar-Powered Dress
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on April 7th, 2010
Gadgets seem to slowly be making their way into the fashion world. Sure, they aren’t really something you see everyday out on the sidewalk, but they are starting to be created a little more. I’m still not sure that I want an electronic dress, but it would be another way to make sure all of your small gadgets stay charged. Whether or not something like this would ever catch on enough to be produced is strongly debatable though.
The ultrathin photovoltaic films are very thin, so they will let the fabric fall naturally. Plus they create a little bit of a design on the dress. The USB charger is attached at the waste of the dress itself. Combining fashion and technology could be incredibly tricky for the general public. Fashion is notorious for changing constantly and technology has the same issue. To combine them would mean you have a dress that will stay in trend and with the times for all of a week.

Sphelar solar cells provide a transparent power generator on windows
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on March 31st, 2010
What you are seeing here is the Sphelar solar cells. They are made by the Kyosemi Corporation, which debuted at the PV Expo 2010 in Tokyo.
The purpose of the Sphelar solar cells is to improve on regular solar panels. You know how most solar cells are flat, and are at only one angle? That isn’t really an accurate way to collect the sun, but Sphelar solar cells are solidified drops of silicon that can be molded into any shape. For example, they can be placed on a curved dome that allows the sun to hit it from any angle.
As you can see, the Sphelar material is also near-transparent. This allows the user to put it on any ordinary window, and it will make it into a solar power generator. It will also make it slightly tinted, which will keep out the blinding sunlight when it needs to be kept out.
I suppose that the potential for this tech is pretty endless. For example, can you imagine all glass skyscrapers becoming solar-powered energy producers? What if all homes had these Sphelar cells on their windows? Granted, I don’t know how much energy you can get from these things, but hey, every little bit counts when saving energy.

Landport Solar-Powered Speakers
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on February 26th, 2010
Apparently these oddly shaped speakers are Japan’s very first set of active speakers that are solar-powered. These look more like a cryptic scroll than a set of speakers, but they are speakers. They’re also speakers that will help you become just a little more eco-friendly. After all, every little bit helps. These flat speakers are shaped just right to give you the sound you need and suck up all the sun they’ll require to keep up and running.
Once the Lithium-ion battery has managed to get a full charge, the speakers will run for a full 8 hours continuously. The 19.5cm by 11.2cm by 5cm speaker can be connected to your iPod or MP3 player through the stereo mini input. It weighs 290 grams and will be released in Japan sometime this coming March. At that time it’ll be priced at 5,250 Yen or right around $58.

The Solar Powered Bottle Boat Kit
Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on January 28th, 2010

Although you probably couldn’t pay me to go near water as cold as it is outside, eventually it will warm up again. At least I’m pretty sure it will. Once that happens you might want to pick up one of these Solar Bottle Boat Kits to give you something to do while you’re near some water in the middle of the summer. It’ll give you something to play with, plus the joy of knowing that you built it yourself.
The boat uses a solar panel on the top to keep itself powered. Don’t worry all of the technology that goes into the kit is completely waterproof. It’s all made with water usage in mind. All you need to get that’s outside of the kit is a plastic soda bottle. There are a total of 3 different boat designs for you to choose from. The kit comes with a solar panel, wires, motor, propellers, tape, shafts and other various odds and ends. You can purchase the kit for $24.95 from the Solar Sphere.
