NTT’s “t-room” is almost like being there
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on August 27th, 2010
I realize that this picture looks like two ordinary people shaking hands, but what is actually going on is far more technical and far more complex.
This photo comes from my Source, who was at NTT’s Showroom at Tokyo and got a chance to try out the “t-room”. Yes, that is what they call it, and is actually is very similar to sitting down for tea.
Here is a brief explanation of what the t-room does. A person stands in this small circular room that is surrounded by person-sized video screens. They can see an image of the person they are talking to, who is in another t-room somewhere. This allows for some video conferencing that is exponentially better than FaceTime on the iPhone 4. You can watch the video after the jump to see what is up.
In the photo, you see these two people shaking hands. In actuality, only the man is real, and has just overlapped his hand with the image on the screen.
Not only is the t-room good for video conferencing, but it is possible for the user on either end to program a different background. For example, the user gets to see the Aurorae in the video. Not only can the background change, but the user can put windows of information on display, as if life was one big Powerpoint Presentation. You can also see that in the video, along with some weird time-delay feature. If you haven’t watched the video by now, then I don’t know how many more hints I can drop to get you to watch it.
I’ve had a lot of phone calls and video conferences in my time, but I think the most life-like communication that I could experience, other than being there, is with the t-room.

LG uses Hillcrest Labs’ patented Freespace in-air pointing and motion control technology their 3D TV
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on August 27th, 2010

Hillcrest Labs is proud to announce that LG, the South Korean consumer electronics giant, will be using their patented Freespace in-air pointing and motion control technology for their latest line of 3D-ready, Internet-connected HDTVs which have hit the Korean market, only to be unleashed upon the rest of the world later on. Known as the “Magic Wand” remote, it will see action in selected models within LG’s new INFINIA line of LED LCD HDTVs. Just to whet your appetite, the INFINIA sets will come in a slim design, a thin bezel, and an enhanced Internet connectivity package that will carry with it a variety of entertainment options, such as LG’s NetCast Entertainment Access. Not only that, the inclusion of a wired Ethernet jack in the INFINIA sets will allow these NetCast-enabled TVs to integrate themselves into a wireless home network seamlessly thanks to a USB wireless broadband adaptor (that is sold separately, unfortunately). If you love being first in everything, then the INFINIA models ought to be your purchase choice, since they are the first to use LG’s unique “Magic Wand” remote control system.
LG’s “Magic” user interface will merge Internet-based applications, television menus and embedded games amongst others using simple hand motions (should be a snap to those who have had experience with the Nintendo Wii, while newcomers will find it natural and intuitive) to control an on-screen cursor on the television. No longer will you need a computer, since the “Magic Wand” remote with Netcast will be able to access and navigate Internet-based applications specifically designed for the TV.
What makes the “Magic Wand” so special? Apart from its high resolution pointer accuracy that makes it a snap to easily select icons and images, small and large, on a high-resolution screen, you also benefit from orientation compensation – basically, it doesn’t matter the orientation of the Magic Wand remote in space, Freespace technology will still generate intuitive cursor motions on the screen. The use of MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensors combined with Hillcrest’s proprietary software will result in consistent control of the device from any position – standing, sitting or reclining.

WASP seeks out Wi-Fi and gives it back
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on August 18th, 2010
If you were to take a look at this thing, you might think it was a giant wasp.
It actually is a WASP, also known as a Wi-Fi Aerial Surveillance Platform It is actually a modified US Army gunnery target drone, and it does fly.
The purpose of this flying guy is to be a Wi-Fi sniffer. It is guided by an open source auto pilot, and it has a lot of equipment to seek out a stable Wi-Fi signal. From there, it can beam it back to its operators via Wi-Fi, RF, or 3G connections. It was recently presented at Defcon 18, a hacker’s convention at Las Vegas.
Okay, I want to see if I’m getting this right. Someone has invented a flying device that will sniff out a Wi-Fi signal, and then can beam it to you. Man, I would get something like this in a second if it could really guarantee me a signal every time. Instead of opening up my laptop and hoping that a signal is there, I could just let the WASP seek it out.
Except wouldn’t this WASP eventually lose power, and fall? Maybe if it was solar powered, or working like a kite, then we would have something. Yes, I’ve got to come back down to Earth for this one. Somebody might want to correct me with a comment if I am misinterpreting the use of the WASP.

Berlin Brain Computer Interface lets you play pinball, with your mind
Posted by admin in Games Gadgets on March 5th, 2010
This is an odd way to play pinball, don’t you think? Shouldn’t this man be standing in front of the machine? And what’s with that wired bathing cap?
This is probably what I would have said if I was at CeBIT 2010 and passed by this display of the Berlin Brain-Computer Interface. As it turns out, this man is playing this game of pinball with his brain. I’m not saying that he’s really getting his head into the game, but his head is playing the game.
You can watch a video of the setup of this person in action after the jump. I really have no idea if this man is just some visitor to CeBIT or someone who works for the company, but you can watch him as they set him up to play pinball on this Addams Family themed pinball machine. Yeah, I would have chosen a different theme, but the multiple flippers does make it interesting.
Unfortunately, there isn’t really an explanation about how this works on the video, which has absolutely no voiceover narration. I have no idea if you have to think: “Left flipper, right flipper” to get it to work. I notice that this user has to manually start the ball rolling, and I’m guessing that mentally tilting is not an option.
I suppose we are probably looking at an age where arcade games make a comeback, and the players are jacked into them mentally. That, or come up with a console version of this mental controls. I suppose that this could be the next version of Project Natal.

The Wearable Telecommunicator is like having a little friend on your shoulder
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on February 13th, 2010
Imagine if Jiminy cricket in Pinocchio was a robot, and he would be on his shoulder like you see in this picture. Granted, Steven Spielberg sort of did that in A.I., but the Wearable Telecommunicator is a reality.
The Wearable Telecommunicator has been developing experimental technology for a robot that is operated by a remote user so he or she can see, hear, and even gesture through the shoulder-mounted robot.
There is a video after the jump, and you can see the user of the Wearable Telecommunicator with virtual reality goggles. You know, the type that we all thought would be wearing by now back in the early nineties.
So I guess this is some way for a person to be in two places at the same time. In other words, the human can talk to someone new at a party, and the robot can chime in any time.
You know what it reminds me of? The scene in The Empire Strikes Back where Luke Skywalker has Yoda on his back during training. As I recall, R2D2 was in that scene, so I suppose what we are seeing with the Wearable Telecommunicator is a cross between the bossy micromanagement of Yoda and the helpful metal companion of Artoo.
Of course, this technology is still under development, hopefully we will never see an age where everyone has one of these robot parrots on their shoulder.

RC Hoverpod brings out the kid in you
Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on February 8th, 2010
Hovercrafts aren’t exactly the most popular form of transport even until today, but it does offer a slew of fun if you’ve ever hopped on one. Well, assuming you have never experienced such a privilege, then the RC Hoverpod could be just the thing for you, as it allows you to pilot your very own Hoverpod.
Just like the real thing, the Hoverpod slides around the place by thrusting air downwards and propelling along in zippy fashion, leaving you to use the remote control to guide it past obstacles (tables, chairs, the legs of family members). Though it won’t work on water, you can still have hours of fun playing at being the skipper as you nimbly guide the Hoverpod across smooth floors and carpets (as long as the pile isn’t too shaggy).
The law of diminishing returns applies here, where a 10-minute charge offers 5 minutes of hover-time, while the remote control ought to be stocked with a quartet of AA batteries. As with everything else, there is a need for practise as the RC Hoverpod has a learning curve before you can zip it around with aplomb. Each of the RC Hoverpods will cost £24.99, where you can choose from red or blue colors.

Tamiya R/c car replica
Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on January 15th, 2010

Check it out – a full sized, vintage Tamiya radio controlled car replica of the vintage Sand Sorcherer which was released by Tamiya a good three decades back. While the original remote controlled car was 10% the size of what could possibly be the best selling radio controlled car ever manufactured, this life sized model ought to make heads turn. Don’t bother with D batteries for this though, as you will definitely need a whole lot of juice to move something that size remotely. While Christmas is a far way off, that doesn’t mean that you can’t start saving up for this if you’re feeling particularly loaded and want to please the man-boy in your home.

Rē Accessory turns iPhone into a universal remote
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets, iPod Gadgets on December 19th, 2009
Just when you thought that the iPhone is the bee’s knees, enter another accessory that further augments that line of thinking – the Rē Accessory which will transform your iPhone into a universal remote control. Makes us wonder whether the folks at Logitech and all the other companies that roll out super expensive universal remote controls will sit up and take notice of this though, since most people already have an iPhone and to purchase another accessory that offers similar or nearly all the performance of an actual universal remote at the faraction of a price is definitely a no-brainer. You will not need any Wi-Fi to run this, as it is capable of learning IR code from existing remotes while enabling you to customize button images to suit your fancy. To sweeten the deal, the Rē Accessory can definite unlimited rooms with an unlimited number of devices, making us wonder what else the iPhone cannot do.
