Berlin Brain Computer Interface lets you play pinball, with your mind
Posted by admin in Games Gadgets on March 5th, 2010
This is an odd way to play pinball, don’t you think? Shouldn’t this man be standing in front of the machine? And what’s with that wired bathing cap?
This is probably what I would have said if I was at CeBIT 2010 and passed by this display of the Berlin Brain-Computer Interface. As it turns out, this man is playing this game of pinball with his brain. I’m not saying that he’s really getting his head into the game, but his head is playing the game.
You can watch a video of the setup of this person in action after the jump. I really have no idea if this man is just some visitor to CeBIT or someone who works for the company, but you can watch him as they set him up to play pinball on this Addams Family themed pinball machine. Yeah, I would have chosen a different theme, but the multiple flippers does make it interesting.
Unfortunately, there isn’t really an explanation about how this works on the video, which has absolutely no voiceover narration. I have no idea if you have to think: “Left flipper, right flipper” to get it to work. I notice that this user has to manually start the ball rolling, and I’m guessing that mentally tilting is not an option.
I suppose we are probably looking at an age where arcade games make a comeback, and the players are jacked into them mentally. That, or come up with a console version of this mental controls. I suppose that this could be the next version of Project Natal.

The Wearable Telecommunicator is like having a little friend on your shoulder
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on February 13th, 2010
Imagine if Jiminy cricket in Pinocchio was a robot, and he would be on his shoulder like you see in this picture. Granted, Steven Spielberg sort of did that in A.I., but the Wearable Telecommunicator is a reality.
The Wearable Telecommunicator has been developing experimental technology for a robot that is operated by a remote user so he or she can see, hear, and even gesture through the shoulder-mounted robot.
There is a video after the jump, and you can see the user of the Wearable Telecommunicator with virtual reality goggles. You know, the type that we all thought would be wearing by now back in the early nineties.
So I guess this is some way for a person to be in two places at the same time. In other words, the human can talk to someone new at a party, and the robot can chime in any time.
You know what it reminds me of? The scene in The Empire Strikes Back where Luke Skywalker has Yoda on his back during training. As I recall, R2D2 was in that scene, so I suppose what we are seeing with the Wearable Telecommunicator is a cross between the bossy micromanagement of Yoda and the helpful metal companion of Artoo.
Of course, this technology is still under development, hopefully we will never see an age where everyone has one of these robot parrots on their shoulder.

RC Hoverpod brings out the kid in you
Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on February 8th, 2010
Hovercrafts aren’t exactly the most popular form of transport even until today, but it does offer a slew of fun if you’ve ever hopped on one. Well, assuming you have never experienced such a privilege, then the RC Hoverpod could be just the thing for you, as it allows you to pilot your very own Hoverpod.
Just like the real thing, the Hoverpod slides around the place by thrusting air downwards and propelling along in zippy fashion, leaving you to use the remote control to guide it past obstacles (tables, chairs, the legs of family members). Though it won’t work on water, you can still have hours of fun playing at being the skipper as you nimbly guide the Hoverpod across smooth floors and carpets (as long as the pile isn’t too shaggy).
The law of diminishing returns applies here, where a 10-minute charge offers 5 minutes of hover-time, while the remote control ought to be stocked with a quartet of AA batteries. As with everything else, there is a need for practise as the RC Hoverpod has a learning curve before you can zip it around with aplomb. Each of the RC Hoverpods will cost £24.99, where you can choose from red or blue colors.

Tamiya R/c car replica
Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on January 15th, 2010

Check it out – a full sized, vintage Tamiya radio controlled car replica of the vintage Sand Sorcherer which was released by Tamiya a good three decades back. While the original remote controlled car was 10% the size of what could possibly be the best selling radio controlled car ever manufactured, this life sized model ought to make heads turn. Don’t bother with D batteries for this though, as you will definitely need a whole lot of juice to move something that size remotely. While Christmas is a far way off, that doesn’t mean that you can’t start saving up for this if you’re feeling particularly loaded and want to please the man-boy in your home.

Makes us wonder whether the folks at Logitech and all the other companies that roll out super expensive universal remote controls will sit up and take notice of this though, since most people already have an iPhone and to purchase another accessory that offers similar or nearly all the performance of an actual universal remote at the faraction of a price is definitely a no-brainer. You will not need any Wi-Fi to run this, as it is capable of learning IR code from existing remotes while enabling you to customize button images to suit your fancy. iMote Kid Friendly Remote Control
Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on December 16th, 2009
Kids these days seem to grow up way too fast for our liking, and we sure can do our part in making sure they don’t stumble across bad influences – one instance would be the $29.99 iMote Kid Friendly Remote Control.
The iMote is a programmable TV remote just for preschoolers. You select and program the remote with five of your child’s favorite TV channels and the remote does the rest, blocking all other channels from your geekling’s innocent eyes. Pick from 100+ colorful stickers to illustrate each button with the logo of your toddler’s favorite channels. Special bonus for parents of kids with oral fixations – the iMote has passed all safety tests and is completely safe to gnaw, although not terribly tasty. Watch their confidence soar as they channel surf with their very own remote and find their favorite shows with ease.
While it might prevent your kids from stumbling upon undesirable channels, it might just help them develop the unhealthy habit of hogging a remote control from such a young age.

The RC900 Remote-Control Bowling Ball
Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on November 9th, 2009

Some people have this astounding ability to take a bowling ball and actually knock down all of the pins. For those of us that don’t have that ability, there’s finally the RC900. It’ll make sure those pesky bowling pins finally get knocked down where they belong. This bowling ball is controlled by a remote and is easily able to dodge all kings of obstacles, like the gutter for example.
Alright, so it’s actually marketed towards kids and those with physical limitations. Lack of hand-eye coordination is a physical limitation, right? The bowling ball is able to steer by adjusting the position of the weight screwed onto a threaded shaft within the ball. The sad news is, it’s a pretty obvious remote control, so there’s no way to fake out your friends on this one. Plus it’ll cost you $1500 from 900 Global.

PicoZ Heli Mission
Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on November 6th, 2009
Dads who are thinking about what to surprise kids with this coming Christmas might actually end up getting the PicoZ Heli Mission for themselves (using their kids as an ulterior motive so that the wife can approve of the gifts budget).
This groundbreaking R/C mash up combines the thrill of helicopter flight with the excitement of driving a SWAT truck. Wow! It might look like a stealthy brute of a vehicle – and it is – but this macho truck features a cavernous cargo bay that opens up, upon your command, to reveal a fully-functioning micro helicopter sitting on an auto-elevating launchpad. Incredible! It’s like Thunderbirds meets Airwolf with a highly Hasselhoffian touch of 80s folly thrown in for good measure. Both precision-engineered machines are controlled via a single transmitter with smart shoulder buttons that allow you to switch seamlessly between truck and chopper.
It will take some fair bit of hand-eye co-ordination to keep on alternating between the two as you plan an imaginary assault on the enemy base. One thing though – what happens when the helicopter is in mid-air and you switch over to the truck? Will it just hover there until the subsequent instruction? Guess you’ll need to fork out £59.95 to find out!

Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on October 31st, 2009
Want to own what is touted to be the smallest flying R/C device to date? The Mini HoverDrone is your cup of tea then, where it will impress virtually anyone who lays eyes upon it. Boasting a diameter that won’t surpass that of a silver dollar by much, you get a lone propeller at the bottom that helps it hover in the air, spinning and flashing its blue LED to attract attention simultaneously. A simple slider control makes way for up-and-down movement, making it a snap for virtually anyone to control it in an instant. $19.99 is the asking price for this small miracle.
