Samsung IceTouch PMP with transparent AMOLED screen

500x_icetouch_blue_011_copyRight now, I am writing from Las Vegas, and waiting for CES 2010 to officially begin. I’ll be attending CES Unveiled later this afternoon, where I will get a lot of “sneak peaks” at new products. In the meantime, there have been a lot of new products that have been getting leaked to the media.

For example, the IceTouch (YP-H1) from Samsung. This is a new PMP with “the world’s first 2-inch, full-color, transparent Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) touch-screen display”. Yes, someone finally made a PMP with a completely transparent screen, and that someone was Samsung. Be sure that the history books are updated.

The IceTouch can function as “a DVD-quality video player, studio quality audio player, an ultra-portable photo album, and FM radio and even a portable storage device”. It supports such audio formats as MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, MP3HD codecs, as well as video playback for MPEG4, WMV, H.264, Xvid and Divx file formats.

The IceTouch has 16GB worth of memory, and the user interacts with it using a “TouchWiz Sweep” Interface. I’m not certain what that is, but it is “designed to provide a comfortable grip and give users new options for interacting with their player”.

The IceTouch comes in white with customizable skins of pink, blue, purple, and grey. It will be on display at Samsung’s booth at CES, but there is no word on a price or date of availability.

Onda VX520 portable media player

onda-vx520

Another day, another portable media player comes along that tries to unseat the iPod range (iPod classic and iPod touch) as the portable media player of choice, but this time round the Onda VX520 fails to do just that. Not that it isn’t of any good for that matter – no sir, after all, it supports 720p videos albeit coming with a rather tiny 3″ LCD display. On the other hand, you can always hook it up to your HDTV via its HDMI out port for a high definition experience wherever you go. No idea on pricing, but it does support a wide range of video files including RMVB, AVI, DAT, FLV, MOV and MKV.

BlockBuster to put Movies on SD cards

blockyBlockbuster definitely felt the pain when Netflix caught on, and it has been years since I have been to a Blockbuster video outlet. (Probably because most of them have closed down.) I generally use that whole RedBox thing, assuming I even want to rent a movie these days.

Yes, it seems that Blockbuster was a little slow to realize that the days of traditional movie rentals is ending, but they have a new plan that could easily put them on top, as far as video rentals are concerned.

Blockbuster intends to start a new program that would involve the kiosks that you see here. All you would need to do is insert your own SD card, and then pick what movie you want to watch.

The movie is then loaded onto that card, and you can take it with you and watch it on whatever media that you prefer. These movies are DRMed and will expire after a certain date, so you don’t have to worry about returning the movie at all.

Surely this is the future of video rental, but isn’t there technology to stream the latest videos into our homes now? I suppose this would be a low-cost alternative, but not everyone has SD card readers on their televisions. My laptop doesn’t even have a card reader, and it’s only a few years old. It makes you wonder why Blockbuster didn’t choose to use USB Flash drives as the medium for this new technology.

Brando’s SPY Wireless Camera Pen comes with PMP

WirelessSpyCamPen_11_640xThis would not be the first time we reported on a Spy Camera Pen, and it probably won’t be the last, either. Normally, spy stuff made for the consumer looks pretty shabby compared to the technology in James Bond or Mission Impossible movies, but this one from our old friends at Brando looks quite decent.

The SPY Wireless Camera Pen + PMP comes in two parts, a transmitter and a receiver. The Transmitter is the pen itself, that transmits with 2.4 GHz. It has a rechargeable battery powered by USB and shoots 640 x 480 video with a lens that no one would ever see unless they looked really close. The lens is positioned perfectly for secret shooting in one’s breast pocket.

The receiver is essentially a PMP with a 3.5 inch screen. Not only can it pick up what the camera is seeing, but it is good for playing all kinds of formats, such as MP3, WMA, MP4, FLV, not to mention JPEGs and e-books. It has 2GB worth of memory built in to it, and expandable with the TF/Micro SD Card slot. It also has a TV out so you can see what you want on a bigger screen.

Not bad for a price of $159. You can get it right now if you head over to the Brando Site.

FINIS Next Generation SwiMP3 Player uses bone conduction technology

FINIS-SwiMP3-version-2-thumb-550x329-24310I realize that summer is over in some parts of the world, but for those who are still swimming, this next product is for you. Especially if you want to listen to music in the water. You can now have the best of both worlds with FINIS SwiMP3 player.

This isn’t the first time that we have reported on the SwiMP3 player, or an MP3 Player that can play underwater. I think this is the first time we reported on one that uses bone conduction technology, which we have also reported on in the past.

Bone conduction doesn’t require the user to stick anything in their ear to have good music, but relies on vibrations on the skin that somehow relays the sound to your brain.

In the case of the next generation SwiMP3 player, the bone conduction apparatus fits directly on the side of the swimmer’s goggles. All the controls such as play, pause, advance tracks are all on the ear.

Just to let you know, there is only 1GB worth of storage on this guy, but how many tunes are you really going to listen to when you take a dip, anyway?

You should be able to get the FINIS next generation SwiMP3 player for about $150.

Hands on with SanDisk’s SlotRadio

sandisk-slotradio-small-480x420The slotRadio is a simple device that comes ready to use with a microSD preloaded with 1,000 of hits selected from the Billboard charts themselves. The user can use from genres of Rock, Alternative, Country, R &B/Hip Hop, Contemporary, as well as Workout and Chillout.

If you don’t like any of the preloaded tunes, then you can just connect it to your computer and load up the tunes that you do like with drag and drop. So if you want an MP3 player, and don’t want to deal with the hassles of loading, or messing with iTunes, then you don’t have to. In short, this might be the perfect Portable Media Player (PMP) for those who are not in the iGeneration. That’s right, your mother or even your grandmother could use the SlotRadio.

This is the best part of the SanDisk SlotRadio: from out of the box, a new user can instantly immerse him or herself in a world of music. If he or she does not like what is currently playing, the user may cut to the next track, or to another genre. It even has a built-in FM tuner if you want to listen to more music.

This is the worst part of the SanDisk SlotRadio: it is too random. The device only has a forward advance button. So if I wanted to hear “Dream Police” by Cheap Trick again, I have to keep hitting the forward advance until it gets to it.

If this is the PMP for you, feel free to head over to the SlotRadio site for about $99. The company is even offering a Mini Travel Case ($14.99 value) for a limited time.

Lenovo Hits the PMP market with the MRT800

This goes without saying, but Lenovo is quite successful. They are the ones who created some nice netbooks and laptops in the past few years. At CES, they gave us the ThinkPad W700ds with its slide-out screen. They are now turning their eye on Portable Media Players (PMPs) with the MRT800.

The MRT800 doesn’t seem to be very innovative, as it doesn’t offer anything new to the PMP world. Its main feature is a touchscreen that measures at 4.3 inches with a resolution of 480 x 272. The memory is about 4 GB, and there is a mircoSD card slot.

As for the other standard features, it can support RM/RMVB, AVI, ASF, MP4, FLV video, MP3, WMA, FLAC, APE, OGG, WAV, as well as JPEG or BMP images. It also features an FM tuner.

Yes, this PMP doesn’t look like any different than the plethora of PMPs that are already on the market and selling like hotcakes. However, does the MRT800 really need to be different?

So far, there is no word on a price or availability. As long as it is less expensive than your average iPod with that amount of memory, this thing will sell easily. I mean, it is Lenovo, for crying out loud.

Aqua Sounders from Grace Digital Audio

See this ball to the right of the iPod dock? This is a beach ball from the future. Seriously, it is the Aqua Sounder, a spherical speaker for the iPod, but it is quite similar to a beach ball in many ways.

For one thing, the Aqua Sounders are waterproof, so they can float in your pool or hottub. The dock for the iPod on the left is a transmitter so the sound is beamed directly to the speaker. By the way, the transmitter works with most audio sources and is capable of supporting up to ten speakers.

The range of these speakers from the iPod transmitter is a very long at 150 feet. As for the power, Aqua Sounders run off batteries that are sold separately, and are good enough for 6 hours of playing time.

In addition to the floating feature, it has two ultra bright LED mood lights on each side. I suppose that if this speaker is going to be floating in your hottub, bathtub, or pool, it might as well look pretty. I’m betting the sound is good, since I have heard that sound travels better when it is on water.

You should be able to get the Aqua Sounders from the Grace Digital Audio site for about $149.99.

Myracer lisse T10

Sure, Portable Media Players (PMPs) are a dime a dozen, and many of them have identical features. So when it comes to new PMPs, it is mostly about the look on the outside, rather than what the PMP has on the inside.

The Myracer lisse T10 has that distinct look to it that is designed by the same people who created those nice-looking Cowan media players released a while ago. It also has taken a page from the iRiver Spinn as it has that dial interface for “analog scrolling” through the menu screen.

Speaking of the screen, the T10 is a 320 x 240 touchscreen that measures in at 2.8 inches. It also has a built-in speaker, voice recorder, and FM tuner. As for memory, it has about 2 to 4 GB worth of storage, which is enough for whatever audio and video files you want to put in there.

This is one of those PMPs that will have a Korean release, but I’m not certain that it will stay in Korea. Unfortunately, we don’t have any word on price or availability.

Another vague detail that I have from my sources is that the Myracer lisse T10 comes with some games. I’m guessing that you play them with the dial, and I can’t wait to see what type of games they are. Super Monkey Ball, anyone?
