Nintendo Wii could help stroke victims recover

We have reported how WiiSports and other Wii activities are simply not as good real exercise.

However, a recent research project by the American Stroke Association International Stroke Conference 2010 would suggest that playing these virtual reality games could help stroke victims improve their motor function.

This study was based on 20 stroke survivors, and both groups engaged in eight one hour sessions over a two week period approximately two months after suffering from a stroke. The ones who played Wii Tennis as well as Wii Cooking Mama demonstrated “significant” motor “improvement in speed and extent of recovery”.

According to Gustavo Saposnik, the director of the Stroke Outcomes Research Unit at the Li Ka Shing Institute at St. Michael’s Hospital, this is the first randomized clinical study showing that Wii gaming technology can produce effective stroke rehabilitation.

In all honesty, this reminds me of a recent episode of The Simpsons. On this episode, there was a Plot B involving Lisa giving Grandpa Simpson and his rest home a Zii gaming system. Yeah, it’s clear what Zii is satirizing, and the gameplay of ZiiSports was enough to get all of the senior citizens of the rest home on their feet again. Too bad the nurses didn’t feel the same way.

Still, the prospect of the Wii helping victims of strokes is interesting enough to follow up with more studies.

Seal Shield helps Wii fans keep their peripherals clean

sealshield

Ever played with the Nintendo Wii before? Let us assume that the answer is in the affirmative, considering how far reaching the Wii console has gone to throughout the earth with its phenomenal sales figures. Having said that, anyone who have had experienced tense and exciting moments with the Wii will certainly remember just how sweaty their palms got, leaving streaks of dirt and grime on those lovely white Wiimotes after each gaming session. Well, apart from getting Wiimote jackets to keep your Wiimotes in pristine condition, are there any other solutions? Short of sounding like an infomercial, I would like to bring your attention to Seal Shield’s new range of washable, antimicrobial, Wii game controller accessories.

Seal Shield rolled out a quartet of various bundles for a range of games including Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Resort and Wii racing games. These were specially designed with cleanliness in mind as you play the role of the resident gaming deity in your home (after all, cleanliness is next to godliness, no?). The kits are touted to provide you with the most complete, enhanced, multi player gaming experience for major Wii titles. Among the products within are antimicrobial silicone covers, machine washable boxing gloves, dishwasher safe tennis rackets, golf clubs, steering wheels, archery kits, Frisbees and swords among others.

Seal Shield claims that their gaming products were created to help reduce the risk of worldwide cross contaminations with various bugs like H1N1, Norovirus and the “superbug,” MRSA making their rounds, but we’re pretty sure you wouldn’t invite a sick friend over to your place to have some Wii fun, eh? Seal Shield’s range of gaming products also merge SEAL SHIELD waterproof technology and SILVER SEAL technology for antimicrobial protection of the products, allowing you to chuck them into the diswasher once you’re done with your gaming session, and they last much longer as well since they’re resistant to mold, mildew and odor causing bacteria. Depending on the bundle you purchase, prices range from $29.99 to $49.99.

Nintendo DSi now known as DSi LL

dsi-ll

The wildly successful Nintendo DS line has now entered its fourth iteration, with confirmation of the Nintendo DSi LL in the pipeline that is basically a supersized version of the camera-enabled DSi. After all, it gets larger 4.25″ displays on both top and bottom segments compared to the older DSi’s 3.25″, coupled with an extra, bulkier pen with a host of new colors to whet your appetite. Something tells us that Zune lovers might just fall for this since it comes in a similar dark brown color. Out in Japan later this November 21st, it will come with a trio of built-in games, retailing for roughly $220 after conversion which makes it pricier than the Sony PSP-3000 but cheaper than the PSP Go. Do you think the DSi LL will be able to take off in the same manner as its predecessors?

Easy Piano for Nintendo DS

easy_pianoI’m not certain what it is with video game accessories these days. It’s almost like you can’t release a successful game without one. It would appear that Easy Piano has stolen a page from the Guitar Hero playbook by including a fake instrument with their game.

You will note the eight note full-octave keyboard peripheral that attaches directly to the DS itself, and playing it is, of course, part of the game. The end result looks like a sliced section of a Casio keyboard.

Eventually, the user will be able to play one octave’s worth of Mozart, Beethoven, as well as other fare like “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Jingle Bells”. It also includes a recording function so the player can save his or her own one-octave hits.

I’m sure you detected the hint of sarcasm in my last paragraph. I guess it is because I feel that if you are going to make a “Piano Hero” type game, then couldn’t you make a keyboard with a full 88 keys? That way, the player could play the piano for real after he or she is finished playing the game, unlike the instruments on Rockband.

See, video games can teach you something. If you want to check it out for yourself, then you’ll have to wait until November.

Nintendo DS Lite for Mom

spring_ds_bundle_610x455Have you ever bought a gift for someone that you live with, and you really “gave” it so you could use it? This might be the case for when a mother buys a child this new version of the DS Lite.

The child should be immediately suspicious as he or she notices that the DS is lime green in color. I can pretty much guarantee that any kid who is seen in public with a lime green DS Lite will be called some sort of name by the end of the day. I’m sure the kids will start with the easy to use “limey-fruit” and will eventually shorten it to “fruit” in a matter of days.

This version of the DS Lite, which really should be called “The Housewives edition”, comes with Personal Trainer: Cooking. Yeah, junior’s going to be completely addicted to that game!

Did I mention that this edition also comes with a matching carrying case? In all honesty, I don’t really use the carrying case, and I’m guessing most teenage boys probably don’t either.

So, if you are a young lad, and your mother gives you a Nintendo DS that looks like the one in the picture, don’t open it. Your mom will be all over it if you do. Instead, run from the house and exchange it wherever you can. It costs about $149, so you should be able to get yourself something decent for it, like a Nintendo DS of a proper color like white, black, or even red.

GameGrip for the iPhone

iphone_gamegripI have seen this GameGrip on another blogs, and one of them called it “the world’s most absurd iPhone accessory”. Personally, I think that is a little too harsh.

After all, there are a lot of game apps available for the iPhone right now, so why not create something that makes the iPhone like a SIXAXIS in its shape?

Maybe it’s because we all know that the iPhone may be good, but it hasn’t replaced handhelds like the DS or the PSP. Perhaps I should say that it hasn’t replaced them yet.

After all, Apple has recently announced the downloading of its one billionth app. I’m sure that a high percentage of those downloads were Super Monkey Ball or other gaming programs. If more apps come out that are as good (if not better than) the action games on most handhelds, then the GameGrip should come with some buttons.

As you can see, the GameGrip is hardly portable, unless you got a deep pocket. You can also see how to connect it to the iPhone itself, and it will allow for use of the headphones.

If you are looking for a grip for your iPhone with bright blue silicon grips that are completely sweat-proof, then this is a very useful iPhone accessory. It will cost about $51.

The Wii Energizer 2x Induction Charge Station

energizer-induction-charge-station-wii

After a while it gets a little obnoxious having to deal with batteries in your controllers.  Especially if you have more than one.  If you have rechargeables in all of them, then you have to pull them out after they die and wait for them to charge back up again.  That is unless you keep a spare set lying around.  Well Energizer has created a new way to at least make sure your Wiimotes stay plenty charged without the hassle of changing out batteries.

It also allows for you to keep the sleeves on your controllers, instead of having to peel it off of the remote every time you have to change out batteries.  Just place it on the induction charger and it’ll charge up the rechargeable batteries within.  When you purchase the docking stand you’ll also receive 2 rechargeable battery packs.  The Wii Energizer 2x Induction Charge Station will cost you $49.99 from Amazon.  It’s not available just yet though, you can pre-order it now, but it won’t be shipped until the first of June.

Ranger GPS for the Nintendo DS

rangerNintendo DS has been making the news with the DSi, and we’ve reported on a number of new applications for this portable gaming system in the past few years.

I’m not certain if this is the first time we reported on a GPS unit for the DS, but this one from Ranger China is the first that I have ever seen. It looks like all you have to do is plug it in to the GBA cartridge slot, and you got yourself a grand Garmin look-alike!

The Ranger has the latest GPS chipset, and uses Google Maps software. I believe that the plan is to have it work with other devices besides the DS, like a laptop, PDA, or any other Windows CE or Linux devices.

This device is new, and it is so new that I don’t have any price or availability for this product. The fact that Ranger China is making this hopefully does not mean it has an Asian release.

Of course, one would have to ask oneself why have a GPS for the DS? After all, it is a gaming device, and only kids are probably going to use it. Do they need a GPS? Perhaps someone is hard at work at turning the Nintendo DS into an all-in-one device for our young people. However, isn’t that what a cellular phone is doing already?
