Rē Accessory turns iPhone into a universal remote

re-remotJust when you thought that the iPhone is the bee’s knees, enter another accessory that further augments that line of thinking – the Rē Accessory which will transform your iPhone into a universal remote control. Makes us wonder whether the folks at Logitech and all the other companies that roll out super expensive universal remote controls will sit up and take notice of this though, since most people already have an iPhone and to purchase another accessory that offers similar or nearly all the performance of an actual universal remote at the faraction of a price is definitely a no-brainer. You will not need any Wi-Fi to run this, as it is capable of learning IR code from existing remotes while enabling you to customize button images to suit your fancy. To sweeten the deal, the Rē Accessory can definite unlimited rooms with an unlimited number of devices, making us wonder what else the iPhone cannot do.

Power Duo Reserve iPod and iPhone charger by Griffin

powerduoreserve_1I’m not one of those people who always has to listen to an iPod all day, but if I was, then I’m sure I would forget to charge it. Hopefully, you can carry around a backup charger handy.

According to Griffin’s website, their PowerDuo Reserve is “the industry’s most trusted AC and 12 volt chargers”. The included portable battery is designed for the iPod and iPhone.

All you have to do is magnetically lock the small battery pack to the car charger or AC adapter, and the tiny green lights let the user known when it is charged. Later, when you are listening to your iPod and see that its battery is getting low, just plug in the charged battery pack for a little more juice.

I had a chance to try it out, and it didn’t take long to charge the Reserve Support battery at all. My only complaint is that the car charger adapter and AC adapter had a USB port, but there was nothing in the Power Duo Reserve that seemed useful for recharging USB devices. I suppose you could use the included USB to iPod connector cord to charge it that way if you want to.

You should be able to purchase the Power Duo Reserve for about $59.99 on the Griffin site.

Sharper Image Portable Speaker System

Portable DockingThe Sharper Image is no stranger to clocks that double as iPod docks, like the Clock Radio we reported on the other day. This particular clock radio is made for travelers.

You can’t see this from the photo, but this L-shaped dock can fold up into a 12 X 3 rectangle, which is about the size of a hardback book. This convenient and portable shape can then be tucked into the included soft travel case, and the user can carry it around to wherever they go.

The Portable Speaker System sounds pretty good, considering it has 2.25 inch speakers that carry 3 watts each. It is powered by the AC Adapter, or four not included AAA batteries.

You can put the iPod and iPhone on the dock, and control it with the controls on the iPod or iPhone itself. The controls for setting the clock and alarm are located somewhat awkwardly underneath the base itself.

So not only can the user take an alarm with them wherever they go, but they can take their tunes as well. It doesn’t look like you can make the alarm ring to your favorite tune, though.

You can get The Sharper Image Portable Speaker System Dock for the iPhone and iPod on the Sharper Image site for about $99.99.

The Sharper Image Clock Radio is iPod/iPhone dock

00011007-z1I had a clock radio that was beside my bed all throughout the eighties, and this new Sharper Image Clock Radio dock for the iPod and iPhone reminds me of it.

I believe that part of Sharper Image’s re-launch is to make electronic products that are not only neat looking, but practical. And what could be more practical for life in the new millennium than an dock for the iPod or iPhone? Especially one that can double as an alarm clock.

With this Sharper Image Clock Radio, the user can wake up to the radio or some custom playlist, or just the usual beep tone. It also features a dual alarm and an auto off timer and nap feature that you can set 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes.

It is powered by two AA batteries (not included) or AC power, and the sound is to be expected from 2 inch speakers with 6 watts each. Of course, it does come with a handy remote control, that does include the battery. By the way, the remote has a snooze/nap button, which will make it easy to sleep through the alarm, doesn’t it?

You can get The Sharper Image Clock Radio Dock for the iPhone or iPod for about $99.99 on The Sharper Image site.

Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter is a world’s first

e1253629589So what is the world’s first that the Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter will be known for? According to my source, it is the first iPhone controlled hardware. I have only one response to that: Really? Seriously, the iPhone, aka the Jesus phone, has only had this one iPhone controlled piece of hardware? Now that is one bad iTrip.

So how does it work? iPhone users will connect the iTrip to the iPhone or iPod touch, and then the iTrip will display tuning controls and a SmartScan button. The trademark technology will help find the most ideal frequency to broadcast music, podcasts, and audio books to any nearby FM radio, such as a car stereo.

It has a tuning wheel that is much like old-school radios, and a large menu for easy fingertip navigation of the controls. Also, “the transport controls allow track changes directly from the iTrip and return tactile button feedback to the iPhone or iPod Touch”.

By the way, the iTrip is fully compatible with the iPod classic, iPod nano 4th generation, and iPod nano 3rd generation. The iTrip will also display track and artist information on RDS compatible radios, and has 3 easy-to-use presets for instant recall.

You should be able to purchase the iTrip at major retail stores or the Griffin site for $49.99. The iTrip controller is a free app available at the iTunes App store.

OWLE Pefects the iPhone 3GS for Video Shoots

owleNow that the iPhone has video capability with the 3GS, there will undoubtedly be many iPhone-filmed videos on the many video-sharing sites on the Web.

Of course, why would you want to shoot videos on a cellular phone? I’m sure you have seen how jittery they are. This is why a startup company known as OWLE (Optical Widgets for Life Enhancement) has created a mount for the iPhone designed for filming.

I don’t know about you, but I think its shape resembles a controller for the Xbox 360. Not only does the OWLE steady your shots, but it also improves recording quality by including a 37mm camcorder lens with a front facing microphone.

It is a packaged deal for those who want to be video bloggers on the road, and there is planned support of external lighting and power. There is also a plan to make another version that plugs into the 30-pin adapter. As of now, there are only plans to plug the mike into the headphone and microphone jack.

OWLE doesn’t have this device out now, and it will only make it currently available to bloggers who are willing to promo it. There are plans to put out this device sometime around Christmas, with a price for about $30 to $50.

MLB Scores with iPhone Baseball Fans

MLB at bat will stream live ball games to your iPhone or iPod. Batter up.

MLB at bat will stream live ball games to your iPhone or iPod. Batter up.

Major League Baseball has given the green light for an iPhone application which will allow live streaming of baseball games. Called MLB at bat, the application takes full advantage of the new streaming capability of the iPhone 3.0 software, will cost around $10 and will work on both the iPhone or iPod Touch.

Users will not only be able to watch live games, but also listen to the audio feed if they want to save on battery power (and a full nine innings will sure kill the battery long before the last out on video streaming), get Game day updates and in game video highlights.

Since the iPhone 3.0 update has been pushed out as of today, the application is available now - just in time for MLBs first live streaming game, the Chicago Cubs vs. the Chicago White Sox at 2:20pm eastern time as part of a double header which also includes the Detroit Tigers vs. the St. Louis Cardinals at 8:15pm ET.

But don’t look for the Dodgers or Yankees to be coming to an iPod near you soon, MLB wants to roll out streaming gradually by only broadcasting “out of market” games - i.e., Yankee fans don’t get the Yanks and Dodger fans don’t get Chavez Ravine.

Flip announces own video channel

flip-logo

Not satisfied with giving their customers YouTube capability, Pure Digital - the makers of the Flip pocket video cameras, are updating their on board software to make it easier to upload videos by creating their own custom channels which thhey can then invite others to enjoy.

This is especially comforting to parents who want to share videos of their friends and family without letting anyone else viewing them sans permission (although, to be fair, YouTube and other video hosts do have privacy settings that also do just that).

When users upload video to their dedicated channels, an email goes out to a previously approved “white list” of email addresses advising them there’s an update to the channel with thumbnail previews included.

Flip's new video channel lets users create their own private YouTube like experience.

Flip’s new video channel lets users create their own private YouTube like experience.

The software will also allow users to drag clips off the channel, edit them or update them and then drag them back. Lastly, in concert with the new Flip software comes an iPhone application which enables MacHeads to watch Flip Channel videos directly, as well as recording videos using their iPhone and uploading them directly to the channel.

Unfortunately, for the Mino and Ultra HD Cameras, the quality of video viewing won’t be true 720p, but the reality of HD on YouTube and other video hosts is that it isn’t really shown in true HD anyway.

New iPhone finally gets video and more

New iPhone 3GS: faster and now with video!

New iPhone 3GS: faster and now with video!

At the World Wide Development Conference, the new iPhone, dubbed iPhone 3GS (speed) introduces a much faster interface and processor, cut and paste, yada yada yada, but what iPhone fans will really enjoy is the new 3MP camera with autofocus, auto white balance, and VIDEO!

BUt that isn’t more. Not only can users capture those priceless moments in video, but they can also edit those clips with the new editing app and then upload either to YouTube, Mobile Me, or email.

The camera shoots in standard definition VGA with audio and at 30 frames per second. Users can also swap between still photo and video mode on the fly. And a new API will enable integration of video capture into applications so that apps of the future will enable the video feature to it’s fullest potential.

There are plenty of other features as well, including vastly improved battery life, a digital compass, voice control, remote wipe in case users find they’re in the unfortunately position of having their iPhone lost or stolen, but the video option means that long weekends and vacations can now be enjoyed and remembered on the fly without lugging around yet another camcorder for video. Very nice.

Cost is $199 for 16GB, 299 for 32 gigs, and the 8GB stays at $99. Comes in black or white and is available June 19th.
