ATH-AD700 Open-air Dynamic Headphones from Audio-Technica
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on February 11th, 2010
I got a chance to try out the ATH-AD700 Open-air Dynamic Headphones from Audio-Technica, and I would say that I am impressed.
Of course, I am usually easily impressed by any pair of padded headphones. As much as I love the retro-glory of the padded ‘phones, the ATH-AD700 has some interesting features.
For example, the lightweight honeycomb aluminum casing, large aperture 53mm drivers with neodymium magnet systems and CCAW voice coils for superior sound reproduction.
The velvet ear-fitting pads are also pretty amazing as well. By the way, I could not figure out how to adjust these guys, but that’s because I didn’t have to. These things have some odd tabs that are designed to cradle the head. I was able to shift them from my head to my seven-year-old daughter’s head without any adjusting whatsoever.
Other terrific features include an extra long cord, as well as the gold-plated stereo 1/8 inch (3.5mm) connector with 1/4 inch (6.3mm) adapter.
You may notice that these headphones have sort of fibrous exterior. I remember when I first took these out of the box, I thought the ear cups were speakers themselves. It was a shame that wasn’t one of the features.
If you’re wanting to get one of these guys, head to the Audio-Technica site and get one. You will have to lay down about $249.95, though.

NoiseBuster Active Noise-Canceling Hearing Protector
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on November 20th, 2009
Research has shown that most men have shorter lives than women due to the type of lifestyles they lead – including late nights of boozing with their mates, being in a high-pressured job, undergoing plenty of stress as he wonders how is he going to pull his family through a crisis, and perhaps even engaging in crazy stunts and sports for that bit of adrenaline rush. Well, most men too would be involved with the use of power tools, and is tasked with mowing the lawn with NASCAR race attendance as his reward. Some of those activities mentioned do involve being exposed to high levels of noise at any one time which if left unchecked, could lead to permanent hearing loss many years down the road. With Christmas coming up in slightly more than a month, why not give dad the protection he needs with the NoiseBuster Active Noise-Canceling Hearing Protector? This professional-grade, high-performance equipment will merge a passive earmuff with active noise-canceling electronics to deliver overall noise cancellation performance that is unmatched by any other hearing protector.
Apart from its superior noise cancellation, the NoiseBuster is full well capable of delivering awesome audio, essentially making this a great 2-in-1 audio choice – to prevent you from running a higher risk of hearing loss, while enjoying your favorite tunes in greater detail as it blocks external noise. Not something we would wear when going jogging or cycling though, as those activities require you to hear what’s going on outside just in case you end up as roadkill and a statistic. The NoiseBuster allows one to listen to music or the ball game without overamplifying or distorting the signal in order to compensate for the noise.
The NoiseBuster PA4000 is currently priced at $149, and if you happen to fork out that kind of money for it, you will be pleased to know it will come with a hard carry case, an audio cable and an AA battery to get you started right out of the box. The 2XL headphones collection
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on October 17th, 2009
While I was visiting the Skull Candy booth at CES last January, they talked about their 2XL collection. I’m not certain my why Skull Candy is forgetting about the popular log and branching out with this separate new collection, but it is here.
The Spoke (top left) is your basic in ear bud with noise isolation and in-ear acoustics. It bears a strong resemblance to the standard iPod earbuds and costs $14.99.
The Groove (top right) is a little bit more advanced, but only because it has the hanger function for around the ear. Unlike the Coosh Headphones, this hanger is not flexible, but these headphones cost just $14.99.
The Ratio (bottom right) is another ear bud, but different in style from that of the Spoke. It is the lowest price at just $9.99.
The 4 Corners (bottom left) is an over-the-ear headphones that hearken back to the days of the Sony Walkman. The square pads cover the ears well, and are at the highest price of $19.99. (To this writing, these style of headphones are out of stock, but probably will be replenished soon! Hopefully before the holidays.)
The 2XL headphones come in oddly-named color combinations that you have to check out for yourself to believe like Wrecking Ball, Snake Eyes, Nuevo Sonido, Grills Black, Grills Pink, Rasta, and Bunny. You should be able to head on over to the 2XL website and order up any style of these headphones (with currently one exception) for the varying prices listed above, or at merchandisers everywhere like Kohl’s and Best Buy.

Coosh Headphones are designed to stay on, at a low price
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets, iPod Gadgets on October 12th, 2009
I’ve reviewed many headphones and earbuds, and I have discovered very little that differentiates one brand from the other. The Coosh headphones are definitely the most unique that I have seen in quite a while.
Coosh headphones (not to be mistaken for the Koosh line of weird rubbery fuzzy balls) are made by the BIC company. As you can see by the silicone earring, these phones will stay in your ear a lot better than a BIC pen on your ear. They also come with a high capacity clip on the wire for a little added staying power. The Coosh website shows a man breakdancing with these things on, and the Coosh headphones stay on while he is upside-down.
By the way, these earrings are completely detachable, so if you don’t want that look, or if you’re not into active activities like breakdancing, then you can go without them. As for the sound, it is quite good with “full-bodied stereo sound quality” that is as good as it is advertised.
The Coosh headphones come in both white or black. A pair for the iPod or other compatible MP3 Player costs about $24.99. Coosh headphones for the iPhone, Blackberry, or other music compatible phone cost about $29.99. The extra money is apparently for the in-line headset mic with push-to-answer and mute buttons.

iHome iHMP5 Series is both headphones and stereo speakers
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets, iPod Gadgets on August 20th, 2009
Last time we covered something from iHome, it was their new iHM10B Portable MP3 Player Speaker System. Today is it is the iHMP5 Series, which is something that I have been seeing more and more of these days: a speaker system/headphone combo.
The iHMP5 Series is designed to work with all sorts of music players which include the iPhone, iPod, laptop, and just about anything that has a headphone jack. You put them on your head to enjoy the music in private, and put them down to share it with their friends. That sounds like the slogan for the product, doesn’t it? I actually made that up myself.
Of course, you could probably do the same thing with any stereo headphones, maybe even a pair of earbuds and then crank the volume to 10. Apparently, what makes the iHMP5 Series work is that it has a “magnetic proximity switch which activates the power amplifier and kicks the music to room volume”.
I know for sure that I have reported have reported on another pair of headphones that double as stereo speakers before, but I cannot remember the name. If you know any other headphones/stereo speakers out there, feel free to put them in the comments.
If you are looking for a product like this, feel free to head over to the iHome site and lay down $69.99 in silver, red, and blue.
