SixthSense could help search-and-rescue teams
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on May 26th, 2010
This is a concept device by Dieter Amick, and it is designed to make finding lost people a whole lot easier.
It is named “SixthSense for Search and Rescue”, and it is designed to be a computer that you wear on the front of you.
It isn’t exactly something that looks plausible with today’s technology, because the screen looks like it pulls out like a reverse window blind. Granted, I’ve heard of flexible displays before, and I suppose that the company that makes it cheap to mass-produce and affordable will probably be the next big tech company, and will make billions.
As you can see, the computer screen can retract into a pouch like compartment that is best described as a fanny-pack. Perhaps that isn’t the best description, for the source shows people wearing this fanny pack in front of them and quite high, almost at the neck.
Of course, here is the part where I explain that this is just concept technology, and that this is still just some sort of experiment. However, you can’t help but wonder if this GPS system could make a terrific accessory for search and rescue crews.
I wish it wasn’t called SixthSense. You really shouldn’t name a search and rescue device after a film with the most famous tagline of: “I see dead people”.

GPS Built Into Your Visor
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on April 20th, 2010

I don’t know how many times I have been completely and utterly stressed out, because I was driving in a city I’m unfamiliar with. Only to start swearing profusely when the suction cup for my GPS manages to fall off of my windshield and scare the absolute life out of me. I think I’m suction cup challenged. There should be a support group for that. That or someone could create this concept design and save me from absolutely snapping in the middle of a 6 o’clock traffic jam.
Truthfully my VW Bug’s visor probably isn’t even remotely large enough to hide a GPS unit, but a girl can dream. Sure, this wouldn’t be a preferable design for some, since it may feel as if it’s blocking your line of sight. Then again, that very distinctly depends on the size of your car’s windshield and visor. Of course this isn’t something that’s going to be sold anytime soon, but the suction cup challenged can always pray to the gadget gods that it will become a reality at some point.

Garmin Forerunner 110 Sports Watch
Posted by admin in Clock Gadgets on March 31st, 2010
Garmin has a penchant for all things GPS, and their latest effort would be the Garmin Forerunner 110 sports watch which is touted to come in a sleek package, featuring an intuitive and affordable solution which will definitely come in handy where runners, joggers and walkers are concerned. Of course, there are some of us out there who won’t mind exercising for the sake of sweating it out, but others prefer to have a better and more complete idea on how far they have gone as well as the time taken in order to outperform themselves later on, thanks to the ability of the Forerunner 110 to store the most essential of real-time workout data. The Garmin Forerunner 110 was announced to prepare folks for world-class marathons in Paris, Boston and London, where curious onlookers can check it out at Garmin booths in each location.
It takes but a few seconds of stepping outdoors for the Forerunner 110 to keep track of your distance, pace and time with but a press of the Start button, all without the need for complicated setup methods or excessive accessories. The Forerunner 100 is the result of numerous runners who have had the same request at race expos and retail outlets – “Show me the Garmin watch that has GPS and is easiest to use”, making it the ideal entry-level device that can easily track progress and goals in exercise and training. Apart from displaying time and distance, the Forerunner 110 can also show pace in two ways – averaged out either over the current lap/mile (if auto-lap is enabled) or over the entire duration of the run. For those who wear a Garmin heart rate monitor can also monitor just how hard their heart is working since the Forerunner 110 is able to display current heart rate data and features heart rate-based calorie computation. When you are taking a breather, the simplified menu system makes it a snap to review run data, change auto-lap, set an alarm or edit the user profile.
There is no word on pricing for this water-resistant GPS-enabled fitness watch, as the Forerunner 110 will come with a high-sensitivity SiRFstarIV GPS receiver and Garmin’s HotFix technology which will quickly acquire and sustain satellite reception, regardless of whether you are about to embark on wooded trails under dense trees or in the urban canyons of skyscrapers.

Tamtam Flash by Designaffairs Studio puts directions on any flat surface
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on February 22nd, 2010
I have never used a GPS while walking, but if I did, I would want to use a Tamtam instead of a TomTom.
This is the Tamtam Flash from Designaffairs Studio, and it is designed to make it easy for the average pedestrian who is traveling on the sidewalk instead of on the highway.
As you can see, the Tamtam works as a flashlight which will enable it to work on any flash surface, such as this sidewalk. I can imagine that there must be some chip in it that makes certain that the arrow always points in the correct direction.
I have no idea how the user programs it. Perhaps the user has to connect the flashlight to a separate apparatus, or maybe the whole thing can be programmed right on the flashlight itself. Maybe it will have a touchscreen.
Of course, this is still in the concept phase for now. Why else do you think a silhouette is holding it in the picture. I’m not certain why they went with this shadow of a person rather than a real person, but it looks like the shadow is holding a Wiimote.
The plan is to make certain that this flashlight can create not only arrows, but scrollable maps on the wall. There is even plans to get the Tamtam Flash to read QR codes.

Recon Technologies making some highly advanced ski goggles
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on December 8th, 2009
I haven’t been skiing in over a decade, and there were times that I got lost on the slopes. They didn’t have navigation units or cellular phones back then, but this new device from Recon Instruments could turn skiing into a very high-tech experience.
The Recon Instruments ski goggles have a miniature heads-up display that can show the skier’s position on the slopes, as well as the location of his or her friends. You can even use the GPS function to guide the ski patrol to you in case you crash and burn on the slopes.
Not bad, but that is not all they do. It can also display altitude, temperature, as well as recording the skier’s speed the height that he or she has jumped.
It also has a camera, CPU, and storage. The controls are conveniently on the side for easy manipulation, but that might be difficult with a pair of thick gloves on.
Man, I remember back when ski goggles with an anti-fogging fan was a technological advancement. This one looks like you could watch a video or listen to music while waiting in the lift line. What I would have given for a pair of these goggles back in my skiing heyday.
Recon Technologies isn’t planning to release these models until next year. The price is rumored to be quite high, at $350.

AIDA: A robot head on your dashboard to show you the way
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on October 30th, 2009
Imagine if you were to chop off Johnny Five’s head and put him on your dashboard. I realize that sounds gruesome, and I’m sure someone actually did that at the end of the original Short Circuit, but just imagine that cute little head on your dash having loving expressions, and showing you the way to go home.
This is essentially the role of AIDA (Affective Intelligent Driving Assistant). This robot head not only serves as a GPS Navigation system, but it actually has expressions. It’s eyes will look happy when you’re going the right way, and become a warning sign when you are not. There is a video of this intriguing concept after the jump if you aren’t already sold on it yet.
AIDA is more than a navigation system, though. It is intelligent enough to remember where you have been, and from this information determines your driving habits. It uses a lot of sensors to gather intel, and will even let you know when you’re low on gas, and where is the best place to stop for gasoline on your way.
AIDA is still concept for now, and is under development by MIT SENSElab, MIT’s Media Lab’s Personal Robots Group, as well as the Volkswagen Group of America’s Electronics Research Lab.

BrickHouse Security offers Amber Alert GPS (AAGPS) system
Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on October 15th, 2009

BrickHouse Security has just unveiled its latest Amber Alert GPS (AAGPS) system that will offer unprecedented peace of mind to families, where the diminutive Amber Alert GPS will provide parents with the opportunity to make sure that their kids are safe and accounted for when they’re away from home in a new and easy way. This is made possible thanks to updated GPS technology, which ought to go some ways in making sure that horror stories of parents being separated from their children (intentionally or accidentally) will not happen – or at least, lower the risk by a whole lot more.
The AAGPS will work best when used with the company’s BrickHouse Child Locator product that was featured in Duracell ads most recently. Unlike the Locator that relies on GPS technology to make sure that parents are alerted when their child wanders beyond a set distance of up to 600 feet, the AAGPS device will offer the ability to remotely locate your very own children when they are away, where the nearest way to catch up with them would be to buy a flight ticket and jet set across the continent. All the parent needs to do is place the Amber Alert GPS System into their child’s personal items such as pockets and backpacks, or a more direct approach by attaching it to a wrist, ankle, or belt. Whenever you call or text the AAGPS device, it will return a detailed map and address of the child’s exact location via any text- or web-enabled phone within seconds. Of course, you can also opt to view location updates on your computer if you so desire.
You know what they say – there are no limits to the price of safety and one’s life. The Amber Alert GPS might be rather pricey at $379 a pop alongside a compulsory monthly subscription plan, but contrast that with losing a loved one instead to see just how valuable this could be in the event of an emergency?

At last, Shoes with GPS and Bluetooth
Posted by admin in Bluetooth Gadgets on October 13th, 2009
Well, I suppose it was about time that someone made a shoe with GPS and Bluetooth compatibility. I’m just surprised that it wasn’t Nike. No, the Isaac Daniel Compass and Blue GPS shoes are most likely a first for the shoe industry, and I’m certain they won’t be the only company with a Blue GPS shoe after a while.
Now, you may ask yourself: why would I want a shoe that is Bluetooth and GPS enabled? Well, if that shoe is linked to your phone via Bluetooth, it can use its GPS functionality to let everyone know where you are. That is, if you are willing to let your friends track you online. I suppose you could use these shoes to track people who tend to wander out of their safe zones, like the elderly or small children (assuming their little feet would fit in these shoes).
In all honesty, I’m really not famous enough to have anyone want to track me by my longitude and latitude. I’m guessing the people who are famous enough to have anyone care about their every movement probably have their own paparazzi following them around anyway. In that case, they probably wouldn’t want their movements to be tracked. Ah, don’t you just love the society we live in?
You can pre-order a pair of these Bluetooth and GPS enabled shoes on the Isaac Daniel Website for just $150.

Sony reveals new S Series Walkman
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on August 26th, 2009

Sony has always been synonymous with the Walkman brand name, and the same applies the other way round since the first portable cassette player was launched in the previous century. How time has passed by so quickly, with portable music now being defined by the MP3 file format, with portable video being another entertainment staple these days for people who own a portable media player or cellphoe. Well, Sony has released new stylish S Series Walkman Video MP3 players that also come with integrated high-quality stereo speakers which allow you to share your favorite tunes with others around without the need to cower under the guise of headphones.
Despite packing in built-in stereo speakers, the new Sony S Series Walkman player will come in a slim and compact form factor, measuring no more than 0.5″ thin. The device also boasts a 2.4″ QVGA LCD display alongside a super quick response time so you won’t have to put up with less-than-satisfactory video playback, “Clear Audio” and “Digital Linear Phase Speaker System” technologies.
Apart from those, it is also imperative that a portable media player is able to hold its own on long trips, so don’t fret too much as the S Series Walkman player will come with up to 42 hours of continuous audio playback, although video playback isn’t anything to shout about strangely at just 6.5 hours - and all these are done through the headphones. When you settle for speaker output, performance drops by more than half for audio at 17 hours, while video playback receives a lesser blow at just 5 hours. Other features include voice recording and FM recording capability, and file transfer is as simple as drag-and-drop. The Sony S Series Walkman will come in black, red, violet and pink colors from next month onwards, where the 8GB and 16GB models will retail for $110 and $130, respectively.

Nokia 5230 the most affordable Nokia touchscreen phone yet
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on August 26th, 2009
Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia is really late to the touchscreen phone market, with their 5800 not really setting the stage ablaze since its release, although it is by no means a major flop, doing quite well in certain markets around the world but never really showing off any capability of going anywhere near the iPhone’s dominance. Well, if at first you don’t succeed, try again - and that’s exactly what the folks at Nokia have done with the new Nokia 5230 - this handset was specially built for those who lead an active life and use their handsets as the main device for music, photos and videos, alongside all their online shenanigans.
The upcoming Nokia 5230 enables consumers to obtain new content from the Nokia Music Store, and it doesn’t only cater to just music as it is also capable of purchasing applications, games, videos and other services from the Ovi Store straight onto their handsets after making a virtual transaction. Other practical applications of this new Nokia cellphone would include A-GPS navigation and the latest version of Ovi Maps complete with aerial images and 3D landmarks that works great for more than 200 major cities alongside terrain map views for clearer pedestrian and drive navigation.
Interestingly enough, the Nokia 5230 doesn’t fall short in terms of battery life, offering up to 33 hours of non-stop playback on a full battery charge. It also supports the Comes With Music service that is still in its infancy, offering all you can eat music at a set price. Currently, the Nokia 5230 with the Comes With Music service will be going for 259 Euros before subsidies and taxes. Nice to see Nokia include a 3.5mm headphone jack that makes it suitable for use with most common headsets without having to fork out more money for a proprietary model. The Media Bar offers quick access to your favorite media and applications in a flash for quicker and faster navigation. Expect to see the Nokia 5230 ship sometime in Q4 this year.
