Balance Keeping Bank

balance-bankIf you’re the old fashioned type who loves stashing away all of your loose coins in a piggy bank only to take those coins out from time to time and keep count of the total amount, then the Balance Keeping Bank is definitely not for you. After all, where is all the fun of dirtying your fingers with the smell of old coins, while repeating a tedious task time and again where you could better invest those minutes on other money-making efforts? We’re being sarcastic here, and think pretty highly of the Balance Keeping Bank as a time-saving and convenient tool.

This is the coin bank that automatically tracks deposits and withdrawals, helping young financiers learn firsthand about fiscal responsibility. As each coin is inserted, its value is added to the balance displayed on an LCD panel next to the coin slot; when a coin is dispensed, its value is deducted. The bank recognizes each denomination and automatically sorts coins into four separate chambers as they are deposited. It holds more than $25 and will remember its balance even if power is lost. The bank’s translucent body has hash marks that indicate how much in each denomination you’ve saved and rotates for easy dispensing. Requires two AA batteries. For U.S. coins only.

Can’t they come up with a localized version for different countries? We’re guessing the market isn’t that big to begin with elsewhere, which might impact the bottomline. If you’re interested in the Balance Keeping Bank as Junior’s last minute Christmas present (or perhaps even belated), then Hammacher is carrying it for $29.95.

Good Nite Lite

good-nite-liteBeing a parent would also make you wear another hat – that of being a zombie, since when your little one doesn’t sleep, nobody else at home gets their sleep. That’s the way things have been all the while, but with the Good Nite Lite, we hope that the situation would end up being the better for you. It basically teaches your little one the difference between night and day as long as he/she is able to recognize the difference between the Sun and the Moon. When night falls, the Moon will shine brightly to fill up the room with a gentle light, while the Sun’s rays will shine brightly when morning comes (at your preset time, of course). Measuring 6″ in diameter, the Good Nite Lite retails for $34.99 and makes for a great teaching tool for your little one, while helping regulate your own sleeping pattern to that of a normal human.

Eye Clock

eye-clockDo you get the feeling of being watched all the time even when you’re all alone in your home? Well, you can further enhance that creepy experience with the Eye Clock, where a pair of pupils will replace the hands of a clock to indicate the current time. For example, the left eye will ‘look’ towards the current hour, while the right eye ‘looks’ to the minutes. Needless to say, you are going to get plenty of laughs out of this especially when it is 9.15 or 3.15 (regardless of whether morning or at night), with the pupils looking in crazy, zany directions. This is one of the cooler desktop clocks to date, and will definitely work out great in giving you some laughs (maybe just smiles, but you get the idea) throughout the day. The Eye Clock is going for £19.99 on Firebox.

Pac-Man watch celebrates your favorite chomper

pac_man_pellet_watchNow here is something that I would have wanted back in fourth grade: a Pac-Man watch. Granted, it’s not as cool as a Mickey Mouse Watch, but that’s only because Pac-Man didn’t have any hands.

When I first saw this watch, I thought that what I was seeing was a watch with a display screen. In other words, I saw this and thought: “Cool! A watch where Pac-man roams around the edge and eternally chases a cherry and purple ghost.”

In all honesty, I don’t think that is what it is. It would appear that the hands are not digital, and the Pac-man is described as “an invisible second hand”. Too bad, because the LCD display watch with Pac-Man would have been cool.

Yeah, this looks like a watch designed for die-hard Pac-man fans, and there are only going to be 500 of them made, each of them marked with a specific serial number. It costs about $129.99, and there is even a bundle version that includes a free copy of Pac-Man for the PC.

I don’t know whether you would call this a deal, as you could probably get a watch for a much cheaper price than this. As for the free Pac-Man game, I’m sure you could probably find it on Xbox Live or the Nintendo Wii channel.

Smart E Bear

smartebearForget about the good old Teddy Bear that has come in all sorts of shapes and sizes over the years - it is the 21st century, after all, and the time is ripe for a refresh with the Smart E Bear.

Smart E Bear is freakin’ incredible. Connect him to your computer and sync him with his downloadable software, and your kids will be amazed in no time. Why? Because Smart E Bear will actually talk to your kid by name (he’s got over 1,000 in his database). He’ll sing and tell stories and play games with your urchins in English or Spanish - all you do is load up the content you want, and your child triggers Smart E into action by squeezing his paw. And here’s the kicker: sure Smart E Bear is preloaded with tons of good educational content, but (like iTunes), you can always download more (even new languages for him to speak and teach your geeklings). This means that Smart E Bear can evolve and grow as your children do. He’ll be their friend, teacher, and teddy bear for all time. And when your children move off to college and say they’ve outgrown their Smart E Bear - then you can finally have him back all for yourself.

An evolving bear that has the ability to continue “growing” over the years? Hopefully the amount of quality that goes into its $59.99 build is enough to last your little ones till they enter college, as you know how many stories parents have heard about teddy bears getting their arms and legs ripped off during a more vigorous playing session among kids.

Thumb Stadium Electronic Game Kit

thumb-stadium

Ah, handheld gaming sure has gotten a whole lot more complicated with releases from Sony like the PSPgo and the Nintendo DSi, so why not hark back to the good old days where the notion of handheld gaming did not mean the presence of some high resolution LCD display? Here’s the Thumb Stadium Electronic Game Kit
to get you started, and there are four different built-in games to choose from as described below.

Game 1 - ThumbWar
The object of ThumbWar is simple: press while the other player is pressing. If you do, you get a point.

Game 2 - SlapJack
During SlapJack, Thumb Stadium randomly flashes the center LED red or green. Be the first to press when center is green and get a point. Don’t press if it isn’t green or the other player gets a point.

Game 3 - Jai Alai
Center lights up ~ quickly press to “catch” your color. Press again to “throw” to the other player who has to catch on time and throw back. The time to catch gets shorter each throw.

Game 4 - Reflexy
Reflexy is a one-player game. The object is to quickly press the button that matches the color in the center LED. You go until you miss or are too late. The time to react gets shorter each turn. After the game, your score is flashed ~ Center = x10, Red LED = x1. Press the Red Side Button three times to restart.

The Thumb Stadium Electronic Game Kit can be yours for $19.99.
