Panasonic Hearing instruments have arrived Stateside
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on August 27th, 2010

Panasonic Hearing instruments have finally made their way to the US, where a trio of digital hearing instruments will debut in this part of the world. They will also come in a new form factor which resembles the style of an MP3 player, and will feature a receiver-in-canal and behind-the-ear models to boot. These were specially designed for the patient while delivering features, convenience and performance requested by hearing care professionals and their patients. Not only that, they shed the tag that hearing instruments are outdated and ugly, since this batch will come in an attractive design, and is comfortable to wear, easy to use and have a unique circuit design for high performance and long battery life.
Panasonic’s JZ Series will kick off the range with a style that resembles an MP3 player to keep up with the times. This is a palm-sized unit that comes with an LCD display and a stereo binaural headset (earphone with microphones), and can be worn for hours on end comfortably without inducing any headache whatsoever. Perfect for individuals with dexterity challenges, impaired vision and those with situational hearing loss, it will come with a Scene Select function that allows the user to view the listening modes on the LCD screen while choosing the most appropriate mode based upon the surrounding environment from a quartet of different modes available. A rechargeable battery heolps you make the most of this unit, but you can also rely on AAA batteries if there isn’t a power outlet nearby to juice it up.
As for the Panasonic 4-Series, this will be a Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) digital hearing instrument which is the smallest among the three. It will feature a stylish waveform design, and you can wear it discreetly behind your ear thanks to its diminutive size. It will target patients with mild to moderately severe hearing loss. Last but not least would be the Panasonic 2-Series, a Standard Behind-the-Ear (BTE) digital hearing instrument which will integrate Panasonic’s advanced digital signal processing technologies, targeting those who suffer from moderate to severe hearing loss.

High voltage power towers that look like men
Posted by admin in Future Concepts on August 13th, 2010
You’ve seen giant utility towers before, and they don’t look like this. Their design really is…well, utilitarian.
These utility towers are designed by the Massachusetts architecture firm Choi + Shire, and they recently won an honorable mention award at the Icelandic High Voltage Electrical Pylon International Design Competition, as well as an award from the Boston Society of Architects for unbuilt architecture.
I believe that this concept project is called the Land of the Giants, and it is very aptly named. What else are you going to call two human-shaped towers that hold up powerlines?
I suppose the real question is, would this look good in real life? In all honesty, I can tell you what it reminds me of: Batman and Robin. Yes, the last ever Joel Schumacher Batman film that dared to show Gotham city as this place where statues and buildings were as one.
I didn’t see a single high voltage tower in that film, but it would probably look like this.
I mean, do we want all of our structures to look like people? I mean, what does that say about us as people, that we like to structure our buildings after our own bodies? That is kind of crazy.

Karate Copycat Challenge
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on August 9th, 2010
Want to hone your reflexes, but don’t want to take chances by playing with a crab and its pincers? Enter the Karate Copycat Challenge, where this game will challenge players to use quick, karate-like hand movements in order to match sequences of flashing lights and music. There is a quartet of semi-circular rings in the device itself, were each of them will feature a curved light bar that illuminates according to one of seven possible games. Players will be directed to wave a hand into the open space within a certain interval after a light flashes while a musical note plays to score. In order to keep track of your progress (or your failure to keep up), a motion detector in each space will measure a player’s response time to ensure the sequence is followed to a tee. As you attempt to repeat an accelerating pattern of lights, you will also be instrumental in keeping a song going by waving hands through loops as they illuminate, enabling you to “tag” as many lights within a certain timeframe, or to build/compose songs by playing the game like a musical instrument. Best to get a quartet of rechargeable AA batteries to go along with this if you intend to be on the green side of things. Hammacher is asking $39.95 for the Karate Copycat Challenge.

Evatran Plugless Power Station for Wireless Electric Car Charging
Posted by admin in Car Gadgets on July 29th, 2010
Considering that there will probably be an increase of electric vehicles on the road in the next few years, it’s nice to see that the Evatran Plugless Power Station is already thinking of ways to improve the charging process for these electric cars.
It works with the user installing a shoebox-sized adapter in the car, which works as a wireless power receiver. The car with this apparatus gets near this power station’s parking block, and the charging takes place.
When I say “gets near”, I mean that the car probably has to park directly over this parking block. Only a distance of two inches is allowed, which is dangerously close when dealing with under-the-car devices like this. At least it is better than the in-touch charging devices like the Powermat.
Another bug in this particular process is that the Plugless Power Station only operates at eighty percent capacity, but hopes to achieve ninety at launch.
Clearly, what is going to sell this product is the time it will take to charge an electrical car wirelessly vs. the time it will take to do this with a plug-in wire. If Evatran can do it even ten percent faster, it will be worth the investment from electric car drivers.
The company hopes to launch this by April 2011, with a $800 pricetag.

iSafe Bag with built-in alarm
Posted by admin in Kids Gadgets on July 26th, 2010

When kids are sent off to school, be it elementary, high school or college, parents are going to worry. It just comes with the territory. However, if you feel your kids could come into harm there are gadgets out there to help them out. One of them is this iSafe bookbag that has a built-in alarm directly in the strap. If the child is in trouble and needs help they can just activate the alarm to get the person that’s scaring the child to run off.
These bags come in all sorts from messenger bags to backpacks on up to laptop bags. They even have bags specifically designed for girls that love their pink. The alarm gets set off by pulling on a pin in the strap and doesn’t stop until the pin is put back. The rest of the bag is just like any other bag out there. You can purchase them for anywhere from $60 on up to about $100. It is a little pricey for a child’s backpack, but at least it’ll help you stay calm.

POD Lamp with docking station
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets, iPod Gadgets on July 16th, 2010

If you’re trying to set up a desk in a dorm room you have to be smart about the space you use up. That usually means working solely on a laptop and all of your other gadgets need to do double duty. This POD Lamp might be worth adding to the list of gadgets to pick up before August comes around. The light moves to all sorts of angles, plus it can hold and charge your iPod within the base of the light.
The base also helps with cable management since the cord for your MP3 player of choice just slips through the bottom of the lamp. It features a 13 watt bulb that is said to last up to 10,000 hours, so it should last through any studying you might do throughout the year. The light itself can function at multiple heights and angles, you just have to find the one that works for you. You can purchase one of these for $69.99 through OttLite.

AirTurn turns sheet music electronically
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on July 16th, 2010

Turning pages while playing a musical instrument takes almost as much talent as it takes to learn to play an instrument in the first place. If you’ve switched to reading music on your laptop or iPad there is a way to make it easer to deal with pages. Sadly this little page turning gadget won’t actually help you turn those paper pages that can be so troublesome.
The AirTurn connects wirelessly to your computer as a music reader. To get it up and going you just need to plug the receiver into the USB port of your computer. Then when you’re ready to turn the page you just have to tap your foot on the pedal. It’ll work with most document programs, PDF readers and presentation programs. You can get the AirTurn with pedals for $69.95 to $99.95. It just depends if you want one or 2 pedals. You can also go slightly cheaper and get one for $39.95, but that doesn’t include any pedals.

Beamer iPhone Case
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets, iPod Gadgets on July 13th, 2010
The iPhone 3GS is a very capable phone, and we would have placed the iPhone 4 under that category as well if it did not have reception issues. Well, while the iPhone 3GS could do just about any thing imaginable thanks to its vast array of apps, why not marry such a smartphone with a smart case? That is what makes the Beamer iPhone Case special – no, it is not meant for those who drive BMWs as its name suggests phoenetically, but rather, is more noted for the brains behind the case. Quirky.com is the place where the idea for the Beamer iPhone case was born, and this durable, iPhone-hugging hardcase is equipped with a built-in super bright LED. This is perfect for you to get that extra oomph when you want to make video recordings or shoot photos in low light conditions, and comes in handy when you’re in a cinema and need to find something you dropped on the floor by accident. Good thing it is powered by a replaceable coin cell battery, so you need not worry about having it suck up more juice than your iPhone could spare. £34.99 for a brilliant idea – pun not intended!

Airpiano gets some airtime
Posted by admin in Audio Gadgets on July 13th, 2010

You and I know what a piano is, but an Airpiano? Come on now, from its name alone, how do you think the musical instrument is able to function? Does it mean you will need to blow into some sort of tube before pressing a single key on the piano will emanate sound? Or fast forward to the 22nd century, will this piano float on air thanks to a built-in hovering mechanism? Well, it is neither of the above, although seeing the Airpiano being played in the hands of the master is truly a sight to behold as it gives you the feeling as though you were watching a graceful martial artist, musical conductor or mysterious magician at work here. Why is it called the Airpiano? The answer is simple, really, as it features an innovative interface that is activated and controlled by moving a hand in mid-air above the flat display surface – as long as you remain within range of a sensor array matrix. This is only made possible thanks to custom software, enabling one to have a huge library of tones and sounds at a one’s disposal.
There is a total of eight Infrared proximity sensors together, all of them spread horizontally across the surface of the Airpiano in order to let you play three notes depending on your vertical hand position. These sensors have the option to be specially programmed to provide up to eight control faders for altering volume, pitch, and filters among others. Custom software paves the way for MIDI mapping while Open Sound Control message assignment ensures you will be able to project a vast soundscape at your spatial command. Should there arise the need for confirmation of user action, LED lights located at the surface of the instrument comes in handy.
While it might resemble the Theremin, the Airpiano’s inventor has this to say about his pet project. “What makes it so different from a Theremin, besides the technology, is the concept of interaction. Playing a Theremin is hard to learn since every slight movement of the hand changes the pitch/volume of the generated sound. It also lacks visual feedback. The idea of the Airpiano is to keep things as simple as possible in order to achieve full control over the instrument.”
Expect a limited run of production devices to hit the market sometime in September or October for a yet undisclosed price.
