Insignia Dual Alarm Clock Radio with built-in photo display

9288308_ra-235x300

For an alarm clock to have a built-in radio is nowhere near something new.  It’s actually probably one of the most common combinations out there.  However, this clock radio takes things a step further and allows for you to personalize your alarm clock.  It has a photo display to make sure that you stay close to your family, even while you’re away traveling.

The screen isn’t too bad of a size to display your pictures on, but it’s not exactly a big screen.  The photo screen measures 3.5” and has a pixel resolution of 320 x 240, as well as has a 4:3 aspect ratio.  You can store your pictures on the 128MB of internal memory.  It also has a built-in digital media card reader.  The digital FM tuner allows for 20 stations to be preset.  Since it does have a radio, you can choose to wake up by the radio or the buzzer.  To purchase the clock it’ll cost you $49.99.

LCD Photo Frame and Alarm Clock combination

photoframe_alarm

Miniature LCD photo frames are nothing new, nor is a small portable alarm clock.  However, the combination of the two could make going away from home a little easier.  It’ll allow for you to have the comfort of using an alarm clock that you trust and keep pictures of your family with you.  Of course it won’t help make your hotel bed more comfortable, but at least it’s something.

The photo frame will hold 30-80 pictures in it, all depending on the size of the pictures themselves.  It has a built-in memory capacity of 4MB.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that you can plug a memory card into it to expand the amount of memory available.  However, it’s forgivable since it is just a small photo frame.  The alarm clock has the usual features that an alarm clock would, it’s nothing special.  You can purchase the set for £19.95 or about $33 through MUJI.

LifeMap: Digital Scrapbook?

lifemap-by-gregory-siegal-thumb-550x295-18336Isn’t it amazing that so many people take so many pictures to “preserve their memories”, only to have digital pics stored all over the place? I’m betting that you have hundreds, if not thousands, of digital snapshots scattered in thumb drives, cameras, and PC hard drives throughout your house. This is not counting the low resolution ones taken by your cellular phone. I swear, the digital revolution was the best and worst thing to happen to photography.

Designer Gregory Siegal has created the LifeMap to solve the tedious problem of organizing the mixup of photos that plague most families. This digital photo album has a touchscreen and keyboard interface, and can hang on the wall or be used on a lap.

As you can see, the user simply attaches the digital camera to the LifeMap, and then the user can tag their pictures with people, places, and keywords. From there, the photos can be organized in a timeline, or even a world map.

According to the official web site, LifeMap will grow as the family grows. In other words, the LifeMap is a scrapbook without the paper, and all the other tools necessary to cut and paste photos and other pieces of paper associated with memories. If you have someone in your family who scrapbooks, then the LifeMap will make their job a whole lot easier.

It is concept for now, but I’m hoping that the LifeMap will adorn my wall one day.

Is the Plan A Electric Planner: great idea or an attempt to resurrect PDAs?

planplanner

PDAs were all the rage in the 90s. Until the smart phone arrived. Then, suddenly, Palm was on the rocks, Tapwave was out of business, and Handspring just started developing and creating Apps. The PDA was, for all intents and purposes, dead once the iPhone arrived, and even before that. So what is up with the Plan A Electric Planner concept by Andreas Svensson? I mean, it’s rather cool to a tablet like foldable screen which opens into a monthly calendar. But is it really going to resurrect a dead market?

It has twin foldable LCD screens which opens into a monthly calendar in horizontal mode or in daily mode in vertical. There’s also to do lists and address books. And the optional USB Dock enables it to connect to your PC for synching.

planplanner2

Yeah, it looks real sweet and perhaps smaller LCDs and advancements in OLED screens could breathe new life into a PDA like device. But honestly … do we really care? I mean, I have personally found that it’s more work to operate a PDA than just having a pocket Day Runner. And if it can’t operate as a phone, seriously, what’s the point?

Portable Bunker aims to save lives in forest & bush fires

bushbunker1

Smoke jumpers. They are some of the bravest first responders in the world. With forest and brush fires blazing, these firefighting special forces parachute ahead, and often times in the middle of, forest fires and seek to create a bulwark to stop fires in their tracks. And often times, tragedy ensues and they become overwhelmed by fire conditions and die horrific deaths, leaving the fire to blaze on. So it makes sense that governments would seek to maximize the survivability of their firefighters. Enter the Bush Bunker.

The Bush Bunker is a portable bunker which is designed for “maximum survivor ability no matter the intensity or type of fire” for over 4 hours of direct exposure to flames. Think of it as a panic room for forest fires. Made of 300mm of steel reinforced fire retardant concrete, these fire pods can be produced in one piece making them structurally stronger as well as water and air tight. Standard models would accommodate up to six adults for more than four hours and would be equipped with compressed air cylinders to maintain positive air pressure and a breathable atmosphere to keep fresh air in and noxious gases and smoke out.

bushbunker2

And an airlock with two fire doors will also product against radiant heat, keeping fire fighters in a comfortable temperature inside. The Bush Bunker will also come with bench seats, battery powered electric lighting, UHF Radio and emergency transponders, as well as fire blankets and fire aid materials. And for around $20,000 AUD, it’s a bargain in today’s cash strapped firefighting budgets.
