Tobii’s Lenovo Laptop – Keep your Eye on it!

I am a firm believer in the less is more theory, but I probably dont mean it like you think. I believe that the less I HAVE to do the MORE time I have to do all the other stuff I want… I really enjoy gadgets that do things for me. I am waiting in breathless anticipation for the washing machine that will iron my clothes and a self cleaning refrigerator. Yup, my favorite gadgets are those that help me do less, and now that Tobii Technology has teamed up with Lenovo and come up with a laptop that doesnt require you to use a mouse – or a keyboard, well, lets just say the future looks bright.

To use the Lenovo laptop you just need your eyes. The process seems relatively user friendly, you simply sit in front of it and after a thirty second calibration test that consists primarily of following several dots around with your eyes you’re done, and the laptop will go through the paces that your peepers suggest, look at an icon, voila! information about that icon. If you are reading, the text scrolls as needed. It’s an unencumbered way to interact with your laptop, and one that could be ready for consumer applications in as little as 2 or 3 years.

Tobii’s new method of input and its accompanying software can be used in any number of ways, from taking over cursor control from the mouse, letting you move the cursor with your eyes to tracking gaze points, where gazing at an image for a few seconds brings it to the forefront and in a slideshow format, you can pan through images by looking from right to left. How very Mission Impossible!

While it might be a while before we can actually get our hands on technology like this, it sure sounds like fun, how practical will it be? That remains to be seen… I do see some amazing gaming possibilites and some strong usefullness to differently abled folks who might not otherwise be able to use a keyboard. I dont know why I’m so impressed, I can get my 8 year old to do almost anything just by the way I look at her…

Kidz Gear has new headphones for little ones

You know that back in the day, owning a mobile phone was pretty big business. You had to be a person with a reasonably comfortable bank balance in order to purchase one of these puppies, and there was still this thing called payphones as well. Make an appointment with a friend, and ensure you stick to the time and place religiously, as there was no way to keep in touch otherwise. These days, the cost of ownership of phones have dropped so much that even little kids own a handset, and the more privileged ones carry around iPhones in addition to a slew of other Apple products such as an iPad and iPod touch.

This revolution in the mobile consumer electronics industry has certainly led to a change in the way third party accessories manufacturers churn out products – they now have an even larger market to target, and Kidz Gear decided to throw their lot with Cupertino’s devices with their latest offering, targeting kids who own a myriad of Apple devices, coming in the form of the Kidz Gear Apple Wired Headphones for Kids.

Yes sir, the Kidz Gear Apple Wired Headphones for Kids will play nice with the iPad, iPhone and iPod, and will ensure that their hearing is not spoilt or put in harm’s way directly thanks to the built-in “KidzControl” Volume Limiting Technology that paves the way for safe volume listening. At least they need not repeat your folly of cranking up the Walkman or Discman’s volume levels with Black Sabbath playing, where even the rest of the passengers in the same car can hear what song you’re listening to at that moment.

Volume levels are limited to a maximum of between 80dB and 90dB levels, and it has even been ergonomically designed with soft padded child-sized ear-cups and high-quality audio components. As for your wallet, you need not worry – it has a sticker price of just $29.95, making the Kidz Gear Apple Wired Headphones for Kids perfect as a travel accessory in order to keep the little ones quiet during a long road trip. They even need not ask, “Are we there yet?” as they remain entertained by their favorite music tracks or movies on the iPad or iPhone.

The Nabi – Not your Daddy’s Tablet

I guess everybody expects that I’m a gadget geek. It would come as no surprise that I have a multitude of electronic devices in every corner of my home. I have smart-phones and laptops, desktops, movie players, movie streamers, recorders, set top boxes, iPods, iPads, Android stuff galore… and an 8 year old child that we affectionately call “the crusher”

So it is certainly my pleasure to introduce you to “the Nabi” . Finally, a 200 dollar kid-friendly android tablet that has a responsive touchscreen, large size app buttons, access to a huge variety of kid appropriate content like music, books, games and movies. The Nabi also has some pretty nifty  parental controls built right in. So, if you have nightmares every time your little darling puts his mitts on your 600 dollar iPad, the Nabi might be able to calm your fears and delight your child, all at the same time. (How often does that happen?)

Nabi has a high-resolution Multi-Touch display that allows kids to easily interact with tons of games and content. Nabi comes with over $150 worth of pre-loaded games, music, apps and books. Nabi is capable of running over 500 applications and games catered to kids and that can all be found in the kid friendly – Nabi App Store.

You’ll also find a 1.3 megapixel camera, a mini-USB port,  a built-in microphone, and an audio jack. The Nabi supports WiFi and comes all wrapped up in a pretty rugged kid friendly package. (and after the kiddies hit the sack, you can unlock it with your secret password … shhhh.) It all sounds good to me, but somehow I know “the crusher” is going to get me anyway.

Scrubbing Windshield Wiper Blade

Most of us would think that the ordinary wiper blade is good enough to get the job done – that is, ensuring the windshield is clean of debris whenever it rains, or if a pigeon or two decide to poop on your car. Well, the $16.95 Scrubbing Windshield Wiper Blade goes the extra mile in a sense that this patented wiper blade is capable of scrubbing through windshield debris when the situation calls for it, leaving a clear, streak-free view of the road so that your vision will not be betrayed by something as simple as some bird poop that strategically landed right in front of your eyes.

Common windshield wipers tend to smear and obstruct your field of vision, but this patented wiper will use dual blades, where the outer edges will boast of hundreds of tiny triangular scrubbers which are more than capable of completely removing bugs, bird droppings, frost, and dirt within a couple of passes. As for the inner edges of the blades, these will function by channelling water and debris off the windshield, so that you are always greeted by a clean, unhindered view.

Mobileye driver safety solution

The recently concluded CES saw thousands of gadgets, gizmos and even services offered to the masses, and it is virtually impossible to cover all grounds, even if you have a staff count like Engadget. The Mobileye driver safety solution is one nifty gadget that was paraded on the CES showfloor, where this unique solution intends to help drivers avoid and mitigate collisions, while enhancing the overall driver experience.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) claims that majority of accidents occur because of driver inattention in a matter of three seconds right before a collision. While the airbag (which was invented nearly 45 years ago) offers protection for the driver from collisions, the new Mobileye 5-Series intends to take a more active approach with the mantra that “prevention is better than cure”, and in mitigating collisions, our highways should be safer for everyone.

The cutting-edge Mobileye systems comprise a smart camera and proprietary algorithms and microprocessor that will function in unison, detecting and alerting drivers to unintended lane departures, imminent collisions, pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists on the road. Heck, it is also smart enough to “read” speed limit signs, control your hi beams intelligently while alerting you of the most common forms of accidents – rear-end collisions. The third eye of technology, so to speak, and thanks to Bluetooth connectivity, the Mobileye 5-Series will also be able to work in tandem with your smartphone to deliver visual alerts for critical conditions on the roads.

Other safety functions include Mobileye Lane Departure Warning that alerts you whenever you unintentionally veering into another lane, Mobileye Forward Collision Warning (FCW) that alerts you 2.7 seconds before a collision so that you can react accordingly, Mobileye Headway Monitoring and Warning (HMW) that delivers programmable visual and audio alerts before collisions, and Mobileye Pedestrian Collision Warning (PCW) that prevents or mitigates accidents during the daytime thanks to visual and audio warnings that kick in up to 2 seconds before an imminent collision with a pedestrian or bicyclist.

The Mobileye 5-Series is able to fit most types of new and existing passenger cars, trucks, buses, RVs, and will work regardless of whether the sun or moon is up.

VooMote Zapper is now available

Have you been looking forward to the VooMote Zapper? Well, I want to play harbinger of good news – the VooMote Zapper is now available on Apple.com, and if you are patient enough, preferring the brick and mortar store setup, it too, will arrive soon in Apple Stores around the country. This elegant dongle will transform your iDevice into a universal remote, Zero1.tv’s latest invention will be battery-free.

Touted to be a versatile mobile solution which is capable of transforming your iOS device into an impressively smart universal remote which is capable of controlling just about all of your A/V gear, this light-weight dongle might be too small for some folks’ liking – considering it is roughly the size of a paperclip, and will play nice with all mobile iOS 5 devices, delivering maximum flexibility and ease of use when connected to your iPhone, iPad or iPod.

The VooMote Zapper is different from base station solutions, as it delivers convenient “room to room” functionality which enables users to access entertainment whenever and wherever they want, using whatever kind of iOS 5-powered devices that one owns. Not only that, the VooMote Zapper is a snap to set up and use, just like how Steve Jobs would want it. After all, don’t you think that it would be rather ironic if the VooMote Zapper was a pain to set up and use, considering how the iPhone, iPod and iPad were designed to be intuitive? Good thing the VooMote Zapper is in line with Apple’s vision, and the moment the VooMote Zapper dongle is connected, the free app will download automatically, prompting you with a set up screen, giving you immediate control over hundreds of thousands of electronic devices.

Alex Gruber, CEO, Zero.tv, says, “The VooMote Zapper was made to bridge the convenience of the old trusty universal remote controls with new App-enabled technology of the future. We wanted to make a solution that people would really pick up and use every day not because it was “gadgety” but because it was, in fact, a better solution for their lifestyles. Features, such as gestures and take a tour were implemented because we know users don’t want to take their eyes off their TV for a second or read long manuals.”

You can choose from either black or white shades for the Apple certified VooMote Zapper, and regardless of the color, it will retail for $69.99.

Antec Three Hundred Two gaming chassis

Gamers are known for their meticulous attention to detail when it comes to their rig – they more or less know where each screw lies, and what components they need in order to eke out that extra bit of performance. Well, for gamers who prefer to take the DIY route and build a gaming machine that is good enough to pummel your friends’ benchmark scores into submission, Antec might have a decent solution for you in the form of the Antec Three Hundred Two gaming chassis.

This is considered as the next generation of gaming chassis with high-performance cooling advantages and extensive expandability, all without breaking your bank account in the process and getting the other half upset at spending “frivolously” (that depends on whose point of view it is now, isn’t it?).

The Three Hundred Two enclosure is the latest addition to the Gaming Series family, and in order to keep up to the cool image, this sleek chassis comes in the traditional, no-nonsense black shade, and was specially designed to handle today’s and tomorrow’s high-performance systems without batting an eyelid. While gamers are the main market target, system integrators and casual builders are more than welcome to check out and see just what the Three Hundred Two is able to deliver.

The Three Hundred Two was specially built from ground up for maximum cooling effect, and this is made possible courtesy of its perforated front bezel, in addition to dual TwoCool fans, and four optional fans, not to mention the inclusion of a 120 mm CPU exhaust fan that is located right behind the motherboard, so that gamers are able to play long into the night without worrying of a meltdown, and I am quite sure that the fans themselves will be whisper quiet.

Want to expand your gaming rig to accommodate more hard drives and optical drives? Not a problem, as there are eight expansion slots in the Three Hundred Two, in addition to having enough space for up to three 12.5” (318 mm) graphics cards – making it compatible with even the largest GPUs out there. A removable, washable PSU and front intake air filters and a smart cable management system makes it easy for builders to use their new PC right away. Interested? It costs just $79.95 to bring home the Antec Three Hundred Two.

Training Wheels Eliminator

One of the joys of parenting would be to be there when your little one grows up, handling different stages accordingly – it is basically a learning process. Kids these days might lean more towards video games as their entertainment mode of choice, and I would strongly suggest exposing your progeny to more physical based activities like hiking, flying a kite, and even riding a bicycle. Of course, there is that initial fear period to overcome as balancing on two wheels seems impossible for a kid, and this is where training wheels come in. For parents who want to make do away with training wheels, you can always install the Training Wheels Eliminator.

This gyroscopic bicycle wheel will teach children to ride a bike without training wheels, where you replace a bike’s front wheel with it, sporting an internal, powered gyroscope that spins independently in order to generate a force (gyroscopic precession) that stabilizes the bicycle. Whenever the rider starts to topple over due to a loss in balance, the gyroscope precesses, or turns, while guiding the handlebars in the right direction of the fall in order to maintain stability. This encourages kids to lean improperly away from a fall, while preventing them from developing incorrect riding habits.

You can choose from 12″ and 16″ models which retail for $99.95 and $139.95, respectively.
