Ford Motor Company Building Digital Child Crash Dummies

Ford Motor Company is set to begin one of the world’s first research projects to build a digital human model of a child with lifelike re-creations of bones, internal organs and brains in order to enhance the company’s future safety research.

Researchers are constructing the digital model, as they did the adult version, component by component – brain, skull, neck, ribcage, upper and lower extremities, etc. After gathering data through medical scans as well as anatomical texts, the researchers will build the model section by section, recreating regions of the body from childrens MRIs and CAT scans in order to obtain child geometry and basic body information so they may better understand how crash forces affect children and adults differently.

The work is the next step in Ford’s decade-long research to build sophisticated and detailed computerized ADULT human models, with body parts and organs painstakingly replicated so that scientists could better understand what was happening to the adult human body in a crash. Researchers started the project after monitoring and studying injury trends for children, who are generally much more vulnerable in automobile crashes.

The components are created and then joined into a virtual human body, which is extensively validated. Then, using mathematical and analytical tools combined with available body data, researchers will be able to determine the effects of a crash as well as the pressure of a restraint system, on the body.

Smart Spectacles – “See” the World Through the Eyes of a Gamer

Welcome one and all, to the future, the days have arrived where the cheesy sci-fi movie scenes of yesteryear are actually coming true. Case in point, check out these new eyeglasses, you’ve seen them before, they just weren’t a reality, until now…

This SmartVision product consists of a pair of spectacles incorporating EnahancedView technology which can actually be linked to most commonly available IT sources like your mobile phone, PDA, portable DVD Player, Laptop or Netbook, and… wait for it… Video Game Consoles. Hence, these glasses let it’s users dispense with a monitor altogether, the view is in the glasses!

Soon, you might be able to cut our computers loose from monitors completely and be able to project graphical information onto your world by augmenting reality, does it get more sci-fi than this?

Later this year, Laster Technologies based in a Paris suburb, says it will be releasing its first-generation SmartVision spectacles, which will project VGA-resolution color images on the INSIDE of the glasses, powered by a smartphone or a tablet computer and connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

With ad-ons like gesture and voice command, cameras and object recognition I can honestly say I’ve seen the future… and it’s looking right back at me.

You have got to like the SWITL spatula

Sometimes it is the simple things in life that you appreciate the most. For example, something that can clean up a ketchup or mayonnaise stain without leaving any trace evidence (for lack of a better word).

This is the Furukawa Kikou SWITL robot hand, and I have a video of it after the jump removing an ugly stain. What makes it really interesting is how that it is able to put the stain back, as if the stain was never removed in the first place.

Yes, I don’t really see the value of a robotic hand spatula that can move a stain. Especially when I couldn’t help but notice that it looks like the stain was put on some Teflon coated surface. If this is just your ordinary kitchen counter, then it is worth building the rest of this robot’s body to go with the hand if it can do these speedy clean-ups. This is assuming that the robot hasn’t already been built just yet.

Apparently, the purpose of this robot arm is to create a robot arm for bakeries who want to handle soft substances that are too gooey for ordinary human hands. Honestly, I can think of a few places in my own kitchen where this would come in handy.

Neutral Power Drill combines screwdriver, laser level, and stud finder in one

I am definitely in need of a new electronic screwdriver, as this old Wal-Mart one seems to have out-lasted its short life.

If I waited long enough, perhaps this Neutral Power Drill designed by Tim Bennett will become a reality. Not only is it an electronic screwdriver, but it also includes a stud finder and a laser level.

I believe that the laser level is found in the small black rectangle located just below the screwdriver bit. I have honestly never used a laser level before, so I wouldn’t know too much about that, which is the same as the stud finder.

This screwdriver thing works by a slide back head. I would imagine that if you knew what you are doing, you can find the stud, set up a level place to put a screw, and then put it in. As you can probably tell from my last two paragraphs, I don’t really know what I am doing with a tool like this.

Still, I wouldn’t mind having one of these things to make me a handier handyman. The inventor has entered this particular device in an iF Concept design contest, but who knows whether or not he will win. Even if he does, who knows if this will be manufactured by Black and Decker or some other tool company.

Popcornflix.com – 1000‘s of Free Movies Online

Popcornflix.com launched a few days ago and I already had a chance to check it out. Popcornflix is a new online digital platform that allows movie lovers to watch ton of fun movies for free online, anywhere in the U.S. The service will expand internationally in the coming months, and eventually almost everywhere movie viewing platforms are available, including web-enabled TVs, DVD players and set-top boxes.

Popcornflix.com made it easy to browse and select from hundreds of movies, including Comedy, Family, Drama, Horror, Spanish-language films, documentaries and more, all with a pretty easy user interface. Movie lovers can choose a movie by type, the name of an actor or director or simply by selecting a title from the latest in new arrivals, or you can search for all the films featuring your favorite star, but best of all, Popcornflix allows users to share films with friends and family by posting a link instantly to their Facebook or Twitter account. Cool.

Yes, Popcornflix is an ad-supported platform and it does have some oddly placed commercials. They seem to come out of nowhere, not spliced into the show where the film takes a natural pause. It also has some relatively non-distracting banner ads, but the quality is good, the speed is much better than would be expected, and they have hundreds of movies with more being added all the time. So for watching a movie at work, I gotta give it 2 thumbs up.

So grab some snacks and a jumbo Coke and head over to www.popcornflix.com, just don’t tell my boss!

Pioneer SE-NC31C-K noise cancelling earbud stereo headphones

Earphones used to be just that – a device, or rather, peripheral that transferred audio tracks from a music device to your ears. It didn’t matter if you could still hear the roar of the engine on the outside, or your wife’s incessant nagging – the point is, you never had been able to experience something like this before, where whatever music you’re listening to never sounded so close to you before!

Boy, how far has technology come that these days, having noise cancellation technology in your pair of stereo headphones should be the norm rather than the exception, and Pioneer has delved into this particular category with their latest release known as the Pioneer SE-NC31C-K noise cancelling earbud stereo headphones.

As its name suggests, this model was specially designed for noise cancellation of up to 90% (measured at 300hz), allowing you to hear more of what you’re supposed to listen to. The SE-NC31C-K is capable of actively monitoring the nearby sound environment and electronically canceling low frequency ambient noise that can interfere with normal audio listening.

Apart from that, the earbuds will also boast large 14.2 mm drivers and various connection adapters in order to make this more or less the perfect accessory for music enjoyment on the go. With portable music players being a staple device for most people these days, it goes without saying that owning a good pair of headphones is more of an investment than frivolous spending.

Also, this pair of headphones from Pioneer make music listening more enjoyable as there is no need to raise the volume level from the audio source. The earbuds themselves will make use of the microphones which are located in each ear piece in order to measure unwanted low-frequency noise. These components will then follow that up by inserting an equal amplitude, which is the opposite phase signal of the unwanted noise, in order to cancel it before it your ears can catch hold of it.

The SE-NC31C-K can be yours for $99 a pop.
