Honda lets your mind do the work

I’m sure that all of you have heard of Asimo, Honda’s robot that moves with surprising grace. It would appear that Honda Research Institute are working together to make the human mind work together with this artificial body.

Yes, Honda has finally created the world’s first Brain Machine Interface. All a user needs to do is sit with some skull cap interface on, and (electroencephalography) EEG and NIRS (near-infrared spectroscopy) sensors can detect your thoughts and transmit them into action for Asimo.

I watched Honda’s video of this new science. They really hyped it up by introducing a world where we can open our trunk with a thought, or turn on our heater when it gets too cold. I have a video of it after the jump if you would like to see it for yourself.

So are we looking at an age where we just sit on our duffs with our Brain Interface helmet while our mind-controlled robots cater to our every need? If so, then hopefully the interface will not be as large as the beautyshop hairdryer interface that we see in the picture.

I can’t believe that I am discussing an age of humanity where mind-controlled robots lull us into a state of apathy, and all I am concerned about is the ease of the interface. Should I get into the Matrix now or just wait for the machines to take over?

Gametrak Freedom

Nintendo made history when it released the motion controlling Wiimote, so why shouldn’t other video game consoles carry a motion controller of their own? I suppose it would look like a cheap imitation if they did, but why shouldn’t a good idea be multiplied?

A company called Performance Designed Products (PDP) say that Gametrak Freedom is a 3D motion controller for the Xbox 360. In fact, it almost looks like PDP has made something almost better than the Wiimote.

The Gametrak Freedom has Ultrasonic 3D position sensing which uses sound to determine exactly where the controller is in the room. This new tech may unlock a whole new genre of gaming as the controllers can “see” one player throw something towards another player in a room, and it can sense when a player moves out of the way. The Xbox stick also uses accelerometers that can determine the angle of the controller.

I would appear that a lot of the buttons from the Xbox 360 have meandered their way to Gametrak Freedom. I’m not sure how this controller syncs with the console, but it is probably like the Wii. I wish I would stop making comparisons, but I can’t stop, really.

The Freedom is planned to be released with a game called Squeeballs. I’ve seen the trailer for this game, and it looks a little…disturbing.

The MP3 Speaker Pillows have been tie dyed

I might very well be crazy, but for some reason with summer coming up it always makes me think of 60’s inspired things.  Maybe it’s how summer-like the style was, the embrace of nature into the fashion.  Either way, if you do enjoy 60’s inspired items, you’ll love these MP3 speakers.  They’re about as brightly colored as they come and are decked out in tie dye to boot.  Plus these come in several different shapes for you to choose from.

The plush speakers double as an FM radio for times when you’ve forgotten your MP3 player at home or the battery has managed to die on you.  There are a grand total of 5 different shapes for you to choose from, guitar, cellphone, boom box and a peace loving teddy bear.  Although the teddy bear doesn’t have the built-in FM radio that the rest of them have.  To get your music up and running, you’ll need 2 AA batteries.  You can purchase one of these speakers for $24.95 a piece.

Darim Vision PVE400 Wearable/Portable Security Camera

Darim Vision has released its latest wearable/portable security camera - the PVE400 portable video encoder/streamer that is able to hold its own in virtually any environment you pit yourself into (assuming you’re the everyday Joe type who doesn’t go indulge in death-defying environments each week, of course). The PVE400 is meant to provide the wearer with black-box-type archiving to its wireless/IP transmission of video, audio, and GPS tracking capabilities. This is one of the latest generation PVE that brings together simultaneous Wi-Fi streaming and local recording onto a flash memory card without restricting users to either-or choices.

There are many situations where real-time broadcasting for “point-of-view” situational awareness is critical, and these include surveillance to inspection under extreme conditions. Unfortunately at this point in time, current networks aren’t 100% reliable and failsafe, so merging both local recording with simultaneous wireless transmission helps offer an extra layer of redundancy alongside the peace of mind that the entire event can be documented. According to Aaron Taylor, Sales & Marketing Manager of Darim, “Local recording capability provides that important second opportunity to view the action. Like a black box, this capability provides a permanent archive of what happened. Power can go down, networks can fail, but local recording will continue.”

This recording redundancy turns the PVE400 into a “must-have” tool for those who want real-time monitoring as well as others who find themselves in situations where archiving is mandatory. The PVE400 was constructed to be rugged enough to withstand harsh conditions, and is currently being used worldwide by the military, SWAT teams, and special-event security. It has also seen action in remote surveillance applications such as airport, oil rig, and mining inspection operations, so for the average user like you and I, we can be sure that it is able to withstand the everyday rigors we subject it to.

Walking House to take to the streets

Buying a house is one of the most important investment decisions one can ever make, but apart from a trailer, how many of us own homes that can move about? The Walking Home concept is one of the more interesting ones we have come across lately - this is actually a modular dwelling system that allows one to live a peaceful, nomadic life by going through the city’s streets or vast, rolling hills without causing too much of an impact on the environment. After all, the Walking House relies on solar panels embedded all over its body to provide energy within, with small windmills helping it out as well. Water is collected from rainfall, so we would advice staying in areas where there is large amounts of rainfall each year. Inside, expect to live out a spartan lifestyle as you get a basic living module with a composting toilet system, a small wood burning stove and a solar-powered water heater.

Help Lock is a safety mechanism for bathroom accidents

There are several different types of people that are safety concerns when it comes to them and being locked in a bathroom.  Be it because they’re injured, young or elderly, we all have been or will be in a situation where a locked bathroom can become a safety concern.  Granted you could stop locking the bathroom door in some cases, but some situations just can’t be predicted.  Accidents within the home are bound to happen.  Well with this door lock, you won’t have to worry about being either locked in or out.

The lock comes with a timer that automatically comes on when the door is locked.  Once that set time is passed, it will remind you to cancel the alarm.  After 30 seconds, if there has been no answer, it will unlock the door, sound an alarm and dial an emergency number.  The emergency number is one you program in yourself, so it could even be a loved on instead of the general 911.  As of now this is still a concept design by Haishan Deng.

Pizza Vending Machine

Every once in a while, I hear about some weird device that doesn’t sound like it would be a good idea, like a vending machine that can give out hot pizza.

I’m sure that you are all wondering how this can be. After all, pizza is really only good when it is fresh and hot, and most vending machines can only give you snack food like candy bars or anything else that doesn’t have to be heated. Unless you are getting some popcorn or something else that can be microwaved.

Yeah, the pizza vending machine doesn’t seem like a good idea on the surface, but this one is actually designed to prepare fresh dough, shape it in the circle, and then add the sauce, cheese, and other toppings. You don’t have to microwave it afterward, as the “Let’s Pizza” machine will cook it inside the machine itself.

So how much does it cost? Try five dollars for some fresh pizza. I’m willing to part with a five-dollar bill for this.

Right now, the Let’s Pizza is a concept device from designer Claudio Torghele. Is this the beginning of a new way to market pizza? That depends how long it takes to cook. If it is more than 30 minutes, then I want my money back.

MO:BEN Lunchbox heats and stores your food

Anyone who has ever taken leftovers to work for their lunch knows that it can be a pain at times.  First of all you have to decide if you trust your coworkers enough to leave the food in the fridge.  Then you have to deal with a line to the microwave at some places.  I have worked at places before that don’t exactly leave me feeling encouraged to keep bringing food from home.  Well with this lunchbox, it might make things a lot easier and give you more time to relax on your lunch break.

The design is an insulated lunchbox, so it should keep your food cool up until you’re ready to warm it up.  Instead of taking the food to the microwave to heat it up though, you just plug in the box itself.  It also will make it so you don’t have to keep a stash of plastic silverware at your desk, since it comes with some that stay in the lid.  The inside compartments all pop out and can be put in the dishwasher to be cleaned.  This design by Alex Cheong comes in several colors.  It’d be a nice gadget to have around if it ever gets to be created.

iLuv releases 4 packs of 3rd Gen Shuffle cases

I understand the need to add color to your gadgets, a lot do tend to be missing those bright colors a lot of us enjoy so much.  However, the 3rd Gen Shuffle is such a tiny device, it’s a little ridiculous attempting to justify buying a case for it.  I understand it a little more with a device as small as the Nano, but for the Shuffle, it just seem like a bit much. Either way though, iLuv has released cases for the new Shuffle

Even iLuv is feeling the same to some extent, because instead of selling these cases individually, they’re selling them in packs of four.  It was quite nice of them to do so, but that’s still indication of how small these cases would have to be.  The silicon cases will protect your new Shuffle from scratches and scuffs, which is always a serious perk, no matter what the size of the device.  It also leaves access to all of the ports and switches that you would need to get to on the Shuffle. The silicon set has them in pink, blue, black and white.  There is also a different set you can purchase that comes with a transparent case that is tinted black.  The sets will cost you $12.99 from iLuv.
