The Cassette Tape Closet

I’m not really sure that this should be called a makeover, but for the sake of simplicity, we’ll just call it that. This DIY job is for those that have far too many useless cassette tapes lying around. It’s understandable that some would, they were used for quite a few years, so it’d be easy to build up a large stash of them. So it’s established that there are probably quite a few people out there that could probably pull off a job like this. Especially considering it’s as simple as gluing a bunch of tapes to an already built wooden cabinet. What I question is whether or not it should be done.

I, being a gadget dork, have an appreciation for outdated technology getting recycled into something new and functional. However, it really is necessary that it not be terrifyingly ugly. Otherwise, likely your spouse will while you’re not looking smash it to pieces. On accident of course, but trust me it’ll happen. The guy that pulled off this particular DIY used 918 cassette tapes. Sadly this isn’t just some average guy whipping this up in his garage, it was done by the Dutch designer Patrick Schuur and he is attempting to pass it off as artistic.

The Blender Defender keeps cats off the counters

Cats are truly a pain to teach anything, because they really just don’t care.  Then if they know you’re not looking, they are more than happy to take advantage of that.  One devious cat owner finally got fed up and decided to do something about his sneaky kitty.  What you see in the photo is a strobe light and blender.  Both kick on by motion sensor as soon as the cat decides to jump onto the counter.  He also has a video camera pointed at the area that records also when kicked on by motion sensor.

Thankfully, not only has he given a tutorial on how to do this product yourself, he also uploaded the hilarious videos to his website.  Which means even if you don’t have a cat, you get the joy of laughing at someone else’s cat having a heart attack.  The entire project would cost about $214, the most expensive investments being the $120 networking camera and the $50 blender.  Everything else would be fairly cheap to purchase.

DarthCast looks sweet

I certainly did not bet on seeing a portable version of the Dreamcast eight years ago, but today we have super powerful handheld consoles like the Sony PSP and its less technologically proficient DS Lite rival which far outstripped the home consoles of the 1990s in terms of processing power. What happens when you want to get your defunct Dreamcast up and running in a portable form factor? Sega certainly won’t open its doors for you to enter into its R&D labs, leaving you to do things for yourself. Enter hailrazer who has taken his Dreamcast and churned it into a portable form factor known as the DarthCast, thanks to the Lazer Doodle shell. It has a battery life of three hours and uses a PSOne LCD display. Talk about a true Frankenstein!

The Hand Grenade Mouse Mod

If you’ve been feeling like your computer setup isn’t nearly intimidating enough, a hand grenade would probably be more than enough to make it seem more intense.  After all that online gaming, you need to feel all powerful behind your computer.  A wicked looking case and a glowing keyboard aren’t always enough.  Although, gaming mouses do have all those fancy extra buttons, they just aren’t nearly cool enough.  No, the world needs hand grenade mouses for all.

There aren’t a ton of details on the mouse itself, but it was a mod job which was posted online here by the modders.  The mouse is actually made out of an old grenade casing, so it gives a slightly more authentic feel.  However, being made out of the real stuff it’s not exactly made to be ergonomic at all.  It’s just meant to look cool.  The modders actually went through the trouble of wiring up the trigger to function as the left mouse button.  So overall it’s a cool mod, I just hope if you give it a try you don’t use your computer too much or your wrist will soon grow to hate you.
